By completing this course, I have had the opportunity to read and study incredible
authors from the American Romantic and Revolution periods. Throughout these authors' work, I
have seen that their writing often reflects the struggles of losing a loved one. As Christians, we
are called to disciple; therefore, understanding a person’s struggles and comforting them with
God's love is extremely valuable to one’s ability to share the Word.
I have chosen to write about the literature piece Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe.
Throughout this poem, Poe writes about his undying love for Annabel, who has passed away by
being taken by the wind, which indicates sickness. Poe states clearly that he will never get over
the loss of his love and that it will be with him for the rest of his life.
I believe that all people have lost someone dear to them or have seen someone lose
someone special to them. With this poem, the reader can see the extreme pain of losing someone
you love. After the loss of a loved one, many fall into depression or the temptations of earthly
desires; therefore, having the ability to understand the extremes of a person’s emotions and being
able to comfort and be empathetic with them is needed when sharing the Word. 2 Corinthians
1:3-4 says, “All praise to God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is a merciful father and
the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When
they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” The poem
Annabel Lee is beneficial to a disciple because we can see the sorrow caused by losing a loved
one. When I am called to disciple someone who has lost a loved one, I will be empathetic and
share that true comfort can be found in the Lord.
