Essay Title Outline
Thesis statement: John Smith, William Bradford, and John Winthrop were historian leaders in
the 1600’s.
I.There were many men that left England in search of new opportunities. A few of these
men were John Smith, William Bradford, and John Winthrop. All three of these men
faced various trials throughout their journey to the new world. There are many
differences between these men. One of them being their style of writing. These three
men each had very different styles when it came to their writing.
a.Captain Smith used a lot of adjectives in his writing.
b.William Bradford wrote in a “plain style’.
II.Captain John Smith won honors and experience as a volunteer solider on the
continent before joining the first group of Virginia colonists who founded James Fort
in 1607 (Boelhower,W).
a.Smith’s style of writing is more poetic than William Bradford’s.
b.Captain John Smith is a complex figure, and his writings have stimulated a flow
of commentary from historians, literary critics, cultural studies scholars, and
novelists (Boelhower, W).
III.William Bradford was an English Puritan separatist and was originally from Northern
England.
a.Bradford was a leading figure in the Puritans’ Separatist Movement.
b.Bradford stayed in the Netherlands for more than a decade, with the idea taking
root among the Separatist congregation that they should journey to the New
World and settle north of the already established Virginia Colony (Hayes,C).

John Winthrop was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (Bremer,F).

All three of these men have unique stories of how they came to the New World in the
1600’s. Studying their lives has been very interesting because I did not know much
about them before beginning this paper. They all three have different styles of how
they wrote.
