Writing Prompt: In an illustration paragraph, the writer chooses a topic and explains his/her
opinion about the topic, using specific examples to support that opinion/explanation. In the
following four steps, choose a topic for which you hold a specific opinion, brainstorm, and write
a paragraph that illustrates that topic. Refer to the document entitled “Illustration Paragraph
Planning Guidelines” for more details and guidance regarding this mode of writing.
Step 1: Illustration Paragraph Planning and Outline
Directions: Complete all of the elements of the planning; otherwise, the content of your piece
will not be accurate.
Topic: Myrtle Beach
Attitude/Point: Myrtle Beach is the best place to go on vacation.
Audience: Anyone that is planning on going to the beach.
Purpose: To persuade
Topic Sentence: Myrtle Beach is a great place to vacation because it has something for
everyone.
Brainstorm List of Possible Examples: The beaches are spacious beaches, and not overly
crowded. If you do not like the ocean there is a pool at the condo that you can swim in.
There are many different beach shops that are fun to go shopping in. A store called
Boulineau’s is good for grocery shopping. Different Miniature golf courses can be found
throughout Myrtle Beach. Ripley’s Aquarium is fun to go to with family or friends. There is
a good place to eat called King’s Famous Pizza. A good buffet to go to is The Giant Crab.

Directions: Write a rough draft that follows your paragraph plan in the space provided below,
beginning with your topic sentence. Do not worry about spelling or grammar; just let your
thoughts flow. End with a good concluding sentence that restates your general observation or
expresses your initial opinion about your subject in different words. It must be at least 200
words, no less and not too much more.

many activities to do away from the condo. For example, miniature golf is tons of fun with
friends and family. Going to Ripley’s Aquarium is also an amazing sight to see. For souvenirs
and shirts, there are many different beach shops to see. Myrtle Beach has plenty of restaurants
