In August 2018, I gave birth to my amazing son, Carter. I was not myself for over a year
after having my son. I knew I was not myself, but I thought this was just the "baby blues"
everyone spoke of. Until one day, I was on vacation, and I had this realization. It was more than
"just" the baby blues; it was Post-Partum Depression. I was in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, my
favorite place during my favorite time of year. I should have been having fun; I should have
been happy. I remember I was in the car looking out the window at the snow, seeing all the
beautiful Christmas lights, and I felt sadness instead of happiness. I closed my eyes and tried to
pinpoint what was making me so sad, but I did not have an answer; no one thing was making
me sad, just feelings of darkness. It felt as if I had this crushing weight on my shoulders. I
realized I was not living; I was going through the motions of life. I was filled with so many why
questions like why me? How has my family not realized this yet? Does this make me a bad
mother?
However, it was because of this moment that I found my calling. Because of this
experience, I now know why God put me through this trial. I am meant to help other women
suffering from PPD. To bring knowledge to those family, friends, and new mothers who may not
know about PPD. To share my experience so that other mothers know they are not alone and
not bad mothers.
