If you’ve ever read the comments on a social media post, you’ve probably come across
some not-so-nice ones. I get the impression that individuals use social media to broadcast their
ideas and views, but they rarely use it to learn about others’ point of view. If society has a say
we would all think the same. You are considered an outcast and unrelatable if you do not believe
in the same way everyone else does. It wasn’t always like this, before the height of social media
it was much more accepted to have your own opinions. people understood that not everyone had
to think the exact same. That is so not the case for today’s media. When you create your social
media page under the terms and conditions there should be a clause warning you that you must
do what is expected of you. With so many things normalized today such as the acceptance of
numerous topics. It boils down to the simple fact that in today’s world we all must think the
same, agreeing to disagree does not exist. One main idea of this is “cancel culture”. Since its
introduction as a moniker for the concept in 2019, the phrase “cancel culture” has erupted into
the English vocabulary. While the movement, or those who comprise it, claim to be motivated by
empathy for the oppressed cancel culture is a tool used by radical left-wing activist to control
speech, control thought, and momentarily assume influence over any public figure they’ve
chosen to target that day. Cancel culture is becoming a toxic force in our society, in addition to
being catastrophic for its victims’ professions and lives. A new age version of mob governance
sparked the movement. It threatens free expression and is being used as a one sides political
weapon. It is applied unevenly. It appeals to people's worst instincts to tear others down. It's
possible that the cancel culture phenomenon will fade away. However, postmodernism's conquest
of our educational and media institutions will continue to wreak havoc. At least until
enlightenment-based ideologies of reason and objective reality reclaim prominence.
