Writing Prompt: A definition piece takes a word that is difficult to define and seeks to define the
word using a variety of strategies:
A formal, dictionary definition (be sure to give credit to your source);
A personal definition (what it means to you);
An antonym (what the word is not) and/or synonym (a word that means the same thing);
Negation (words that people may confuse with the word);
A personal anecdote that provides an example of the term in action;
An extended example or several brief examples of the word;
The classification of the word (category to which it belongs: example- love is a feeling);
A description of different elements of the word (example- love is patient, kind, does not
envy or boast, from I Corinthians 13);
A comparison/contrast which evaluates the similarities/differences of related topics;
A biblical example (example- John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man
lay down his life for his friends” (KJV);
A brief history of the origin or causes of the term’s execution/application;
Effects or consequences of the term’s execution.

Brainstorm List: -Acts 13:47 “For this is what the Lord has commanded us; I have made
you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.” – My
podcast is a platform I use to help formerly incarcerated men and women transition back
into society. – I am doing a Father Day event going to shelters with homeless men with their
children, we will serve brunch and give out gift bags. -When I was incarcerated, I would
remind the women that no matter what we did to get there God loves us. By sharing the
gospel and reminding the women of how much God loves us and forgives us.
Formal Definition: Miriam Webster Dictionary- Strong affection for another arising out of
kinship or personal ties.
Attitude: Love is positive, Love covers a multitude of sins, Love is patient, Love is kind.
Topic Sentence: Embracing people no matter, race, gender, family background, religion or
what they may have said or done.

Step 2: Definition Paragraph Rough Draft
Directions: Write a rough draft that follows your paragraph plan, beginning with your topic
sentence. Do not worry about spelling or grammar; just let your thoughts flow. End with a good
concluding sentence that mentions the significance of your personal definition to the general
understanding of the chosen term. It must be 200-250 words.
Love is embracing people no matter, race, gender, family background, religion or what they may
have done in the past. Love according to the Miriam Webster dictionary is a strong affection for
another arising out of kinship or personal ties. As a child I never experienced love the way it is
explained in the dictionary, in fact there was no love. As I got older, I realized that what I did not
receive as a child, I was willing to give freely to others. Love to me is an action not a word that
most use freely but do not express it with actions. I recognized while I was incarcerated that
most of the women came from families like mine, where love was not shown and so most sought
it elsewhere. I started to embrace love by sharing God’s word with the women in prison and
although physical touch was never allowed, I would pray for them and not just tell them I loved
them but showed them through my actions, whether that was a conversation or sharing a meal.
My offerings to some may have seemed small considering where I was. However, the bible says
that love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 KJV “ And above all things have fervent love
one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
