To name a few themes of this poem they include religion, man and nature, and life. When it comes
to setting not all pieces specifically have to entail that piece of information in there. The feel of the
setting came from Industrialization era around the 1870s.
The name of the poem is “God Grandeur” by Gerald Hopkins. The theme that first stood out was
religion especially from it’s title. Another thing that stood out religiously were the last two lines
stating, “Because the Holy Ghost over the be World broods with warm breast and with ah! Bright
wings.” The Holy Spirit is representing the religion Christianity. Life, being the theme of the speaking
of the generation’s to generation. The way the author was able to set the mood and feel of the poem
with certain words that expresses the direction it was going is very poetic. The last theme that stood
out to me was nature and life. That’s why I able to find out what the setting was because of how much
detail was brought to the text about the nature, woods, and scent. I myself was captivated by the
poem due to its title alone, which was intriguing because of its mentioning of God but, upon reading
the poem I was captivated due its flow which makes it easy to read and understand as well as it
descriptive nature. To me the poem is a revelation in a sense showing the negative effects that
mankind had on nature in 1877, and how these things are even more prevalent in today’ world.
Indeed, while the poem is a great example of communicative techniques and display of mood, the
themes of the poem include man and nature, life and religion to list a few making this poem
extremely descriptive in nature and having a lot of relevance to the title and to poet Gerald Hopkins.
