Assessment
Jesus, throughout his life on Earth, had demonstrated many leadership traits, six of which
will be briefly discussed in this paper. In the gospel, according to St. Mark, Jesus addressed six
areas leaders need to consider as they develop and communicate their vision to others. The first
area of Jesus’ address saw Him motivating others. He influenced Simon and his brother Andrew
to forsake what they were doing to follow Him, even though He was but a stranger to these men
at the time (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 1:17 & 18). In another account, Jesus demonstrated
competence, when He spoke with authority and drove the unclean spirit out of a man who was
possessed (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 5:8 - 13). In His compassion, Jesus empathized with
the multitude of hungry people who gathered in the desert, where He was teaching and preaching
the gospel, by feeding them with loaves of bread and fish (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 6:41 &
42).
Thereafter, in His vision, Jesus witnessed his own crucifixion. This He explained to His
disciples when they passed through Galilee by telling them that He will be captured and killed at
the hands of men. He further explained that this is significant, as mankind will be saved in the
end (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 9:30 & 31). Jesus preached, taught, and performed many
miracles during His ministry. Amidst all the wondrous things He did, the people still lacked faith
and were blinded to whom He really was. Despite all of this, Jesus, through His determination,
kept on doing the work of His Father (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 8:17 - 20). Being a person
of character, Jesus boldly spoke to Pilot and told him honestly, who He was, although they did
not understand that His kingdom was not of this world (King James Bible, 2017, Mark 15:2).

Analysis
Although the gospel of St. Mark presented several accounts of leadership traits
demonstrated by Jesus, I chose to use chapter 9, as sections of this chapter expressed vision. I
believe that vision is one of the most important traits a leader should have. Understanding where
you or an organization currently stand is important but also knowing the direction you or the
organization need to go, is even more important, as it is written in the book of Proverbs,
‘WhereAthereAis noAvision,AtheApeopleAperish’ (King James Bible, 2017, Proverbs 29:18). Having a
clear vision is very important, especially, to me - understanding my current situation and most
importantly, knowing the direction I want to end up in the future.
Vision is also reflected in the mission and vision statement at the institution I currently
work at. The vision statement suggests that the school provides an inquiry-based learning
environment that promotes active citizenship, integrity, curiosity, and respect for the global
community (Mullen Elementary School, 2022). Like Jesus’ vision in the gospel of Mark, where
He demonstrated what He needed to do at the specific moment was merely to create a better
future, so is my institution’s vision, which demonstrated that the way our students are prepared
today, will prepare them to be better citizens in the future.
Application
Vision is a very important trait to have, as having a clear vision, will help to determine
the direction life takes you. Every year for twenty years, I have had a clear sense of what I want
to accomplish as a classroom teacher at the end of each school year. Understanding the current
state or level of my class, I then plan strategically on what I need to do to achieve the desired
outcome. This works well for me and so I will help my students to do the same. I will, at the
beginning of the academic year, have students examine their current state, and make a list of all
the things they are good at and also areas they still need to improve. Then, have them suggest the

steps it would take to get to the desired outcome. I will have students periodically check their
action plan to determine whether they are following their plan to achieve their vision.
