LEARN ASSESSMENT TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION 2
Technology Integration Assessment
Children are generally exposed to electronic learning devices as early as infancy. Their
interaction with technology continues throughout their lives and most of them become dependent
on technology to complete daily tasks. Incorporating technology into the curriculum taught in
schools is a reasonable thing to do because technology is integrated into every aspect of society.
Whether it is the cashier at the local market or computers that are used to supply energy and
water to cities. From SMART phones to automobiles. There is no way of escaping technology in
modern society. Students are generally assigned Chromebooks or tablets to aid in their learning.
There has been an increase in using video games to reinforce instruction. As a middle school
science teacher endeavoring to prepare her students with the skills to pursue higher education in
science, it is puzzling to see how technology is not a resounding component in the curriculum
that is taught in school.
Curriculum developers should consider how students could benefit from integrating
technology into curriculums. According to a study conducted by Fahmi, Friatin, & Irianti, 91.3%
of students believe that the use of technology-based media motivates them in learning. 95.6% of
students believe that the teacher’s use of online materials helped their comprehension (Fahmi,
Friatin & Irianti, 2020). The same study showed the use of technology can also be used to
improve student preparation for classroom activities. Each generation becomes more
technologically savvy and more self-directed than the generation before (Mosca, Curtis, &
Savoth, 2019, 66). The incorporation of technology for the purpose of learning is effective when
it is deliberate, explicit, structured, goal oriented, analytical, abstracting and generalizing
(Mosca, Curtis, & Savoth, 2019, 68). When curriculum developers intentionally incorporate

technology into curriculums it is easier for teachers to engage students. This increases the active
learning phase and student comprehension. Active learning is comprised of teaching approaches,
environment, and technology that support student-centered learning (Mosca, Curtis, & Savoth,
2019, 69).
There are many programs available that can be intentionally incorporated into middle
school science curriculum that would benefit students learning experiences. During a recent
planning meeting, the curriculum & instruction advisor referred to PHeT interactive simulations
for a virtual lab resource. By building these labs into the curriculum partnered with the
appropriate standard students will be able to perform experiments that their schools may not have
the facilities or materials to do so otherwise. Another interesting opportunity that was shared by a
fellow teacher that was not listed as a resource in the curriculum but can be used to enhance
instruction is Ask a NASA Astronaut. Students can ask astronauts questions about space. 6th
grade science in the state of Georgia begins with learning about space. Students would be able to
hear firsthand what space is like. This is an engaging experience that could be used to teach
cross-curriculum. Other contents could be included, math, ELA, and social studies.
The use of gaming to reinforce learning has also increased in the modern classroom.
However, it is not an actual component of the curriculum. It is expected for teachers to use their
expertise to integrate technology effectively and efficiently into their lessons (Jobirovich, 2021,
461). All teachers are not taught how to in their preservice teaching programs. If curriculum
developers plan the use of programs such as Kahoot and Blooket new teachers or individuals that
are changing careers could also reap the benefit of these education technology tools. Such tools
are generally colorful and child friendly which elevates lessons and increases student
comprehension (Jobirovich, 2021, 464).

Technology cannot replace sound teaching. It can greatly enhance instruction so students
can benefit tremendously. If curriculum developers intentionally plan for the inclusion of
technology in the curriculum it makes it easier for teachers to develop lessons that are engaging,
appropriate, and effective at reaching standards. When students can achieve high standards, it is
beneficial to society.
