Urie Bronfenbrenner
Identify where or how this theory originated.
Urie Bronfenbrenner states that he was heavenly influenced by the interactions that took
place when he was a young boy living in New York with his father who worked at a
medical institution that worked with what Bronfenbrenner called the feeble-minded that
were sent to his father's institution. He began to realize that the children who were being
sent were not feeble-minded at all, but they scored low enough on education tests that they
would never be allowed to leave his father's institution. By observing these children and
how they interacted with the surroundings and the direct result it had on them as they grew
up and eventually left, it would eventually become the core of his later theory on the
influences that affect children as they grow. When he got older, he had the opportunity to
examine cultures in Western and Eastern Europe, the U.S.S.R., Israel, and even China. In
these examinations it further led to his development that people ended up being influenced
by their ecologies in which they lived in and grew.
