Abstract
The significance of regular and substantive interaction in online courses is explored in
this journal analysis paper, which is based on the OJDLA (Online Journal of Distance Learning
Administration) article "Regular and Substantive Interaction in Online Courses: Why it Matters
for Administrators." The implications of this idea for college administrators are examined in the
article, with particular attention paid to how it would affect academic quality, compliance with
federal rules, financial repercussions, and the evolving regulatory environment. It also
emphasizes the significance of taking proactive measures to resolve these problems, particularly
when the COVID-19-related flexibilities come to an end.

Journal Critique: Administration of Distant Education
When institutions completely shifted to virtual teaching and learning during COVID-19,
remote learning was primarily seen as little more than an alternative to the traditional face-to-
face classroom. However, this perception has since changed. Today, distance learning is valued
and well-established in higher education and is seen as a parallel learning modality. To swiftly
increase capacity, staff needed to be trained in online pedagogy and how to use the right
asynchronous learning tools. Higher education leadership should put more effort into planning
and installing systems that will support and sustain high-quality online instruction rather than
focusing on transitioning to distance learning and teaching when preparing and supporting
faculty. The greatest way to maintain high quality online teaching and learning is through
professional development resulting from relationships of collegiality among online teaching
faculty and high touch faculty assistance offered through an online coaching model, the Online
Learning Community.
The rise of online learning has completely changed the face of higher education, giving
students all around the world access to new levels of flexibility and convenience. The necessity
to uphold educational quality and guarantee student success, despite colleges and institutions'
growing acceptance of online courses, is crucial. Regular and meaningful contact in online
courses is essential to accomplishing these aims. The influence of such interaction on educational
quality, institutional reputation, regulatory compliance, and student satisfaction are all discussed
in this essay as reasons why regular and substantial interaction is important for college
administrators.
The standard of education provided by colleges must be upheld, according to college
administrators. The key to attaining this objective in online courses is consistent and meaningful

contact. It makes sure that they interact with the course materials, teachers, and peers in a
meaningful way, encouraging a deeper grasp of the material. Online education runs the risk of
becoming into a static information transfer rather than a dynamic and interesting learning
experience without this connection. The success and relevance of their school are based on
preserving educational quality, as recognized by college administration.
College administrators' primary priority is the achievement of their students. Student
outcomes in online courses are directly impacted by frequent and meaningful contact. Students
are more likely to stay motivated, persevere in their studies, and eventually finish their courses
when they have the chance to interact with teachers and classmates. High retention and
completion rates enhance the institution's reputation and support its financial stability. College
administrators understand that fostering student success in online courses is essential for the
institution's overall success.
A crucial component of higher education is accreditation. Colleges and universities are
required by several accrediting authorities and organizations to demonstrate frequent and
significant participation in their online courses. It is necessary to comply with these standards in
order to keep your accreditation status, hence doing so is not optional. Administrators of colleges
must make sure that their institution complies with these requirements since they are aware that
accreditation is a symbol of legitimacy and excellence. The reputation of an institution has a big
impact on its capacity to draw faculty, students, and money. Regular and meaningful engagement
helps to foster a healthy learning environment and raises student satisfaction levels. Students
who are happy with their school are more inclined to recommend it, attracting new students and
improving the school's reputation. Administrators at colleges understand the value of a solid
reputation.

The legal and regulatory environment for online learning is complicated and constantly
changing. The compliance of their institution with local, national, and international laws
governing online education is the responsibility of college administrators. Since it is seen to be a
safeguard against poor online learning experiences, regular and substantial interaction frequently
occupies a major position in these laws. Administrators at colleges are aware of how crucial it is
to abide by these rules in order to stay out of trouble with the law and avoid penalties. In higher
education, ethical issues are quite important. Whether using traditional or online methods,
college administrators have a moral and ethical obligation to make sure that all students receive
an equal education. By offering students meaningful involvement and support, regular and
substantive connection can help teachers achieve this obligation. Administrators of colleges are
aware of the moral necessity of providing high-quality online education that satisfies the
demands of different students.
Regular and meaningful connection produces useful information that can guide
institutional decision-making. College administrators can acquire insights into student
engagement, performance, and areas that may need improvement by monitoring and analyzing
interaction data in online courses. Administrators may improve course quality, streamline
institutional strategies, and make more informed decisions thanks to this data-driven strategy. For
college administrators, consistent and meaningful involvement in online courses is of the utmost
significance. It has a direct bearing on educational quality, student achievement, institutional
reputation, accreditation status, adherence to the law, and ethical considerations. College
administrators may guide their institutions toward excellence in online education and ensure that
they stay relevant, reputable, and responsive to the changing demands of students in the digital
age by understanding the necessity of regular and substantive connection.

The OJDLA article "Regular and Substantive Interaction in Online Courses: Why it
Matters for Administrators" emphasizes the crucial part that frequent and substantive interaction
plays in distinguishing correspondence education from distance education. The research
highlights the severe economic consequences that institutions can experience if they fail to
include this interaction in their online courses. This analysis aims to investigate the consequences
of this idea for college administrators, highlighting its significance in upholding educational
standards, following laws, and adapting to changing laws. According to the U.S. Federal
Government's definition of distance education, technology must be used to deliver teaching
while fostering frequent and meaningful interaction between students and instructors. This
connection, which might be synchronous or asynchronous, is crucial in separating
correspondence from remote learning.
It is the duty of college administrators to uphold the standard of instruction offered by
their schools. Students are actively engaged with the course material, teachers, and classmates
when there is regular and meaningful interaction, which results in a deeper comprehension of the
subject. Administrators must prevent online education from degrading into a simple information
transfer without this interaction. Regulations by the federal government, including eligibility for
Title IV financial aid, depend on regular and meaningful involvement in online courses.
Institutions that don't comply with these regulatory criteria run the danger of losing access to
crucial financial aid programs, which might have serious financial repercussions. The importance
of regulatory compliance is highlighted by recent audits of universities like St. Mary of the
Woods College and Western Governors University.
There has always been confusion due to a lack of precise definitions and instructions
regarding regular and substantial interaction. However, more exact definitions and standards
White, 7
have emerged as a result of recent initiatives by the U.S. Department of Education (Office of
Postsecondary Education, 2020). Administrators must be mindful that, in the face of clearer
regulations, the defense of ambiguity may no longer be valid. New laws and regulations are
constantly being implemented, which is changing the regulatory environment for online
education. Educational institutions must adapt as distance education regulations evolve in order
to be compliant and minimize potential financial and reputational concerns (U.S. Department of
Education, 2023).
The COVID-19 epidemic resulted in a temporary relaxation of rules and exemptions from
them. Institutions must get ready to comply with the updated regulatory standards for remote
education when these exemptions expire. In order to maintain regular and meaningful contact as
a crucial component of online courses, administrators must offer training and assistance for
instructors. For college administrators, regular and meaningful involvement in online classes is a
top priority. It affects the reputation of the institution, financial stability, regulatory compliance,
and educational quality. Institutions must take proactive measures to address these problems
when the regulatory landscape changes in order to prevent negative economic effects. The
removal of COVID-19-related flexibilities highlights how vital it is to give regular and
meaningful interaction a top priority in online education and make sure that teachers are properly
trained to meet these needs. The quality of online education is maintained and the institution's
adherence to laws is safeguarded in large part by college administrators.
