Parenthetical In-text Citation (Qualls et al., 2025)
Rationale with support from article
for how you know it is basic or
applied research (include
page/paragraph #)
The Qualls et al. (2025) study is basic research because it looks at how co-teaching works,
not how to fix a problem. The authors used interviews and observations to learn more
about teacher partnerships and explain what influences them (see Introduction, para. 4;
Methods, para. 2). It is meant to build understanding, not to test a program.
Rationale with support from
textbook for how you know it is
basic or applied research (include
page #)
According to Kitsantas et al. (2024), basic research is used to build new knowledge and
explain educational problems, not to directly solve them (p. 45). The Qualls et al. (2025)
study matches this because it describes how co-teaching works instead of testing a
solution.
Specific qualitative research design
(Qualitative-phenomenological, case
study, grounded theory, narrative,
etc.)
The article used a qualitative case study design. The researchers studied two co-teaching
teams in their own classrooms to learn of their experience in detail. The researchers
collected data from interviews and observations of how the teachers interacted with each
other. This design helps them to examine the real setting and provide a description of what
was happening in detail.
Rationale with support from article
for how you know you have
identified the design correctly
(include page/paragraph #)
The authors said they used a case study approach to look at co-teaching in one school
(Methods, para. 2). They explained that they collected interviews and observations to study
the teachers' real experiences (Methods, para. 3). This shows it is a case study because it
focused on a small group in a real setting.

(include page #)
Kitsantas et al. (2024) explain that a case study investigates a small group or situation in
depth to understand it better (p. 97). The study by Qualls et al. (2025) matches this because
they studied two co-teaching teams closely in their classrooms.

Parenthetical In-text Citation (Rodríguez Herrero et al., 2023)
Rationale with support from article
for how you know it is basic or
applied research (include
page/paragraph #)
The 2023 article by Rodríguez Herrero et al. is an applied research study. It explores an
inclusive co-teaching model involving teachers with intellectual disabilities and pre-service
teachers, aiming to improve teacher education. The authors explain how they went to
discover how best the model can be used in actual practice for enhancing inclusive
education (see "Introduction," para. 3). The fact that it tries to address a real-life problem in
teacher education makes it applied.
Rationale with support from
textbook for how you know it is
basic or applied research (include
page #)
It is applied research that is used in real-world problems and improves practice in
realworld settings, as described by Kitsantas et al. (2024, p. 46). Rodríguez Herrero et al.
(2023) fit into that category because they examine using inclusive co-teaching practices in
teacher education to improve pre-service teacher training.

Specific qualitative research design
(Qualitative-phenomenological, case
study, grounded theory, narrative,
etc.)
The study used a qualitative case study design. The authors looked at how an inclusive
coteaching model worked in a real teacher education program. They gathered detailed
information from participants.
Rationale with support from article
for how you know you have
identified the design correctly
(include page/paragraph #)
The authors described their work as a case study because they looked closely at one
teacher education program using inclusive co-teaching (Methods, para. 2). They collected
information by talking to participants and watching them. This shows it is a case study
design.
Rationale with support from
textbook for how you know you
have identified the design correctly
(include page #)
Kitsantas et al. (2024) explain that a case study is used to study a program, a group, or a
situation in everyday life and to explain it in detail (p. 97). The case study carried out by
Rodríguez Herrero et al. (2023) goes well with that because they studied a single teacher
education program closely by interview and observation.

RDP: QUAL MM PRE-MATRIX TABLE EDUC 750
Rationale with support from article
for how you know it is basic or
applied research (include
page/paragraph #)
The study by Moore et al. (2024) is basic research because the authors wanted to
understand better how school leaders view strategies for using evidence-based practices,
not to test or apply a new program. In the introduction, they explain that the purpose was
to explore leaders' perspectives and identify themes about supports and barriers
(Introduction, para. 2). This shows it is basic research since the goal was to build
knowledge, not solve a specific problem.
Rationale with support from
textbook for how you know it is
basic or applied research (include
page #)
According to Kitsantas et al. (2024), basic research helps build new knowledge and explain
educational issues. It focuses on understanding why these issues exist rather than solving
them directly (p. 45). The Moore et al. (2024) study looked at evidence-based practice
perceptions in school leaders. Its purpose was to increase knowledge, not test an
intervention.
Specific mixed-methods research
design (Mixed Methods-identify
what is quantitative and what is
qualitative—triangulation,
concurrent, embedded, etc.)
The study used a convergent mixed-methods design. The qualitative part was interviews
with school leaders. The quantitative part was surveys where leaders rated strategies. Both
types of data were collected at the same time and then compared.
Rationale with support from article
for how you know you have
identified the design correctly
(include page/paragraph #)
The authors said they used a mixed-methods design where interviews and surveys were
collected together and then compared (Methods, para. 1). They looked at the ratings and
interviewed themes to find common ideas. This shows it was a convergent design.
Rationale with support from
textbook for how you know you
have identified the design correctly
(include page #)
Kitsantas et al. (2024) describe a convergent mixed methods design as one that gathers
both qualitative and quantitative data simultaneously. The results are then compared (p.
121). The Moore et al. (2024) study matches this because the authors used interviews and
surveys together and compared the findings.

Soicher et al. (2024) research is applied research since it was carried out to improve real
classroom practice in higher education. The authors intended to help teachers use fair and
inclusive teaching methods. They wanted to make the strategies simple to apply
(Introduction, para. 2). This shows that it is applied since the focus was on solving an
applied problem.

classrooms and schools. Soicher et al. (2024) conducted research that supports this fact.
Their study examined how teachers can take inclusive and equitable ways to improve their
teaching practices.

The authors explained their methods. They collected surveys, interviews, and syllabus
reviews together. They then compared the results (Methods, para. 1). This shows a
convergent mixed-methods design. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used at the
same time to answer the research question.

Kitsantas et al. (2024) explain that a convergent mixed-methods design collects qualitative
and quantitative data at the same time (p. 121). Then, it compares the results. The Soicher
et al. (2024) study matches this design because it used surveys, interviews, and syllabus
reviews together. It then compared the findings.
Biblical Integration For the following questions, you will take a biblical worldview connecting research and the Bible. Each
question must be supported with a different Bible verse. Answer each question with 3-5 sentences. Be sure to cite in-text and
reference.
1. In qualitative research it is important to understand people’s feelings about issues and situations. Why would this be
important for a researcher?
Understanding people's feelings is important because it helps researchers see the whole picture and respect each
person's experience. The Bible reminds us, "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn"
(Romans 12:15, NIV). This verse shows that listening and caring about others' feelings is part of loving them well. In
research, it is important to pay attention to the voices of teachers and students. This provides that their needs are
understood and valued.
2. Qualitative research often investigates lived experiences. Explain why getting to the truth is more important than just
looking at a person or groups’ perception of a phenomenon.
7
RDP: QUAL MM PRE-MATRIX TABLE EDUC 750
Getting to the truth in research is important because it helps us understand what really happens, not just what people
think. The Bible says, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32, NIV). This shows
that truth has the power to bring clarity and guidance. In research, seeking truth makes the findings stronger and
more valuable in helping others.
3. Research is purposeful and systematic, but it is also a divine directive. Quantitative and qualitative research both provide
valuable information, but individually, they do not give the whole picture like mixed methods research does. Why is it
important to have the whole picture in research and life when trying to find the truth about something?
It is important to have the whole picture because one part alone may not show the full truth. Mixed methods research
gives both numbers and personal stories, which together make the results stronger. The Bible says, "The way of fools
seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice” (Proverbs 12:15, NIV). This verse shows that listening to more than
one side helps us make better decisions. In both research and everyday life, seeing the whole picture leads to a clearer
truth.
