Through the lens of systems theory and the organism perspective, the school’s overall
functioning, adaptability, and interactions with its environment reveal both its strengths and
opportunities for continued growth (Bolman & Deal, 2021).
Cycle of Production
Organizations operate as dynamic systems that transform inputs into meaningful outputs
through structured processes. At Greendale Elementary, inputs include students, teachers,
paraprofessionals, curriculum materials, technology, and financial resources provided by the
district. These resources are processed through instructional delivery, collaboration within
gradelevel and departmental teams, individualized interventions, and coordinated services such
as IEP development and implementation for students receiving special education (Friend &
Cook, 2021; Scott & Davis, 2016). For instance, Greendale’s multi-tiered system of support
(MTSS) and grade-level data meetings ensure that academic and behavioral inputs are
continuously monitored and refined. This alignment between structured processes and shared
purpose reflects Bolman and Deal’s (2021) view of organizations as interdependent systems that
rely on both clear structure and collaborative culture to achieve effectiveness.
During throughput, teachers use evidence-based instructional strategies and data-driven
decision-making to address diverse learning needs. At the same time, instructional specialists and
administrators provide guidance, monitor compliance, and support professional growth.
Paraprofessionals and support staff assist with targeted interventions, ensuring that students
receive support as needed.
The outputs of these processes include student academic achievement, social-emotional
growth, civic engagement, and preparation for future educational or professional opportunities.

This cycle illustrates the organization’s primary purpose: the cultivation of knowledge, skills, and
social responsibility while meaningfully contributing to the broader community.
Negative Feedback
The sustainability of an organization depends on its ability to respond effectively to
feedback from both internal and external sources. Feedback from subsystems – teachers, staff,
and students – identifies areas for improvement and informs instructional adjustments,
intervention planning, and resource allocation. Feedback from supersystems, including
accrediting bodies, government agencies, and community stakeholders, ensures compliance with
standards and alignment with broader societal expectations. Such responsiveness to multiple
feedback sources aligns with Bolman and Deal’s (2021) concept of organizational learning,
where effective systems adapt to maintain equilibrium and reduce dysfunction.
To reverse entropy and sustain organizational vitality, Greendale Elementary utilizes
structured feedback systems such as staff surveys, student performance data reviews, and parent
advisory meetings. Professional learning communities, structured performance evaluations, and
continuous improvement initiatives ensure practices remain current and responsive to changing
needs (Lunenburg, 2010; Senge, 2006). The organization also demonstrates equifinality by
employing diverse pathways to achieve its objectives; for example, improving student
engagement through technology integration, peer mentorship programs, and family partnerships.
By connecting feedback directly to decision-making and monitoring outcomes, such as increased
student achievement or higher teacher satisfaction, Greendale Elementary demonstrates
measurable progress. While challenges such as survey fatigue or competing priorities can limit
responsiveness, the organization’s adaptive capacity underscores its systemic resilience and
commitment to long-term effectiveness.

Organization’s Proper Place in the Broader Society
The organization fulfills multiple genotypic functions, including productive, maintenance,
adaptive, and managerial/political roles (Bolman & Deal, 2021). Productively, it develops human
capital by equipping students with knowledge and skills. Maintenance functions are evident in
the cultivation of staff morale, professional development, and a supportive school culture.
Adaptation occurs as the organization responds to demographic changes, technological
advancements, and evolving educational standards. Managerial and political functions are
demonstrated through interaction with policymakers, local governance structures, and funding
agencies, ensuring legitimacy and alignment with societal needs. Through these interconnected
functions, Greendale Elementary not only sustains its internal effectiveness but also strengthens
the Riverdale community by preparing students to become informed, responsible citizens who
contribute positively to the local economy and civic life.
Profit Versus Long-Term Survival
While not profit-driven in the conventional sense, the organization must balance resource
utilization with long-term sustainability. The Maximization Principle emphasizes optimizing
educational outcomes and organizational performance without compromising survival (Bolman
& Deal, 2021). Strategic budgeting, grant acquisition, and allocation of resources toward
innovation and essential services exemplify this balance. Within Riverdale Public Schools,
Greendale strategically leverages district funding and state grants to sustain technology upgrades,
instructional materials, and student support initiatives. By prioritizing equitable access to quality
education alongside responsible fiscal management, the organization ensures continued
relevance and resilience. This approach supports both immediate operational goals and the
longterm viability of the institution as a stable contributor to the community.

Scanning the Environment
Effective environmental scanning enables organizations to anticipate challenges and
identify opportunities across multiple sectors. Economically, funding trends and workforce
requirements shape program priorities. Politically, policy changes and accountability standards
influence organizational decisions. Socially, demographic shifts, family dynamics, and
community expectations require adaptive instructional and cultural practices. Technological
advancements, environmental considerations, and societal trends further influence strategic
planning. The organization uses data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative
governance to monitor these factors, such as reviewing district demographic reports, monitoring
changes in state testing requirements, and gathering input from the Parent-Teacher Organization
and School Improvement Committee. This ensures responsiveness and continuous adaptation in a
dynamic environment (Scott & Davis, 2016). This approach reflects Bolman and Deal’s (2021)
assertion that organizations must remain open systems, constantly interpreting and adapting to
external environmental forces to sustain effectiveness and legitimacy.
Conclusion
Analyzing the organization through the organism lens highlights the interdependence of
internal processes and external interactions. The organization thrives by maintaining balance,
responding to feedback, fulfilling its societal roles, and adapting to environmental changes. By
integrating strategic planning, resource optimization, and continuous evaluation, Greendale
Elementary demonstrates resilience and long-term sustainability, exemplifying an open and
dynamic system within a complex social and economic ecosystem.
