Abstract
Education is an ever-changing landscape with constant ideologies being pushed in the
classroom. Technology integration has become an integral part of a successful classroom in
today’s world. Effective use of technology are skills that all individuals need to be successful in
the 21st century. Technology integration is deemed as a tool that will increase student
engagement and motivation. This paper explores the possibilities and challenges when
integrating technology. Challenges can include but are not limited to digital equity, student
safety, and professional development for teachers. Even with the challenges, there are numerous
opportunities for technology to make an impact on educators and students. Technology has
strengthened the value of online learning, access to more data, and personalization. Emerging
trends are on the rise such as smart desks, gamification, and cloud computing. As technologies
continue to improve and advance. It is inevitable that stakeholders, educators, and parents
consider safeguards to keep students safe by promoting internet safety and digital citizenship.
Moreover, it is important to showcase the responsibility and ethical considerations of technology.
Technology integration holds great success for modern education, but emerging trends must be
implemented, challenges must be addressed, and safeguards created to protect our children.
When these things are done simultaneously, technology can be used and implemented to its
fullest extent.

Challenges and Possibilities for the Future of Educational Technology
Timotheou (2023) shares that technologies have brought changes to education and
pushed education institutions around the world to adopt policies for technology integration. This
showcases that educational technology is rapidly growing and changing each day. Educators and
students are faced with new tools and technologies that are implemented in the classroom to help
create successful individuals. In today’s world, educators and students must know how to
effectively use different variations of technology and tools. As technology continues to grow and
change rapidly, it leaves several possibilities for it to be used to enhance the future of education
and the world. However, it does leave challenges in how to implement and use it to its fullest
potential.
Today’s students have grown up with ever-changing technological tools and skills.
Educators and the education system must do their best to keep up with technology and demands
to ensure effective instruction and skills are taught. However, this introduces challenges that
should be identified. A few challenges are equitable access, the need for ongoing professional
development, and concerns about student safety in a digital world (Bacak et al., 2022). Directing
initiatives to combat these challenges is important to guarantee the successful use of educational
technology to its fullest potential.
It is essential to identify the impact that educational technology has on the future of
education. Educational technology presents opportunities for effective teaching and learning,
personalized learning, and the potential to enhance 21st-century skills (Ramailia & Molwele,
2022). Technology is an influential tool that can transform learning. It can also create positive
relationships between students and teachers, promote collaboration, and adapt to meet the
learning needs of all students (Trust, 2018). Smart learning environments can also present
creative and student-centered learning opportunities (Firmin & Genesi, 2013; Ramailia &

Molwele, 2022). Technology integration creates positive outcomes for education if challenges
are addressed when they arise, and it is used responsibly and ethically.
Current Landscape
With the increase in digital technologies, it presents a variety of positive and negative
outcomes. On the positive side, educational technology is beneficial because it improves the
physical environment. It also helps create engaging lessons and gives access to various resources
and information. It also provides a flexible platform for teachers, students, and administrators to
be able to interact with the educational system in an intelligent environment (Al-Taii et al.,
2023). Educational technology also provides personalized learning for each student and increases
student engagement (Kassab et al., 2019; Eiland & Todd, 2019).
There are a variety of perspectives that teachers share when discussing educational
technology. Ventouris et al (2021) shares that teachers’ perception of technology use is
determined by its practicality. Teachers felt that technology integration is effective when it is
“applied in a balanced way” (p. 5). According to educators, the integration of technology is not
negative in the classroom if there is a balance and students can converse, deliberate, and
socialize outside of technology (Ventouris et al., 2021). However, technology becomes negative
with inadequate training. Educators need professional development and training when moving to
a technology-integrated environment due to the ongoing advancements (Uzorka et al., 2023).
Wang et al (2022) share that a teacher’s belief system influences instructional practices.
The success of technology in the classroom is reliant on teachers, the relationship they have with
technology, and their beliefs. Educators must be willing to find and use technological tools that
match their instructional practices. They must also be willing to adapt and learn a new program.
To assist teachers with successful technology integration, school leadership should create a
culture of modernization, professional learning, and ways for students to learn through digital

resources. School leaders and educators should have a shared vision of technology integration to
ensure everyone is up to date on current trends and implementing them effectively (AlAjmi,
2022). With the changing landscape, it is important to stay up to date on current trends and
advancements for technology integration.
Along with teachers, students have expectations for how technology is used. The value of
technology is highly considered, and schools exhaust all efforts to make sure digital technologies
are used in the classroom. Students are pushed to use technology to become innovators, problem-
solvers, and work collectively. Students must develop these skills necessary for future careers
and be in control of how they learn (Keane et al., 2022).
Recent Developments
Even with the rapid advancements that occur daily in technology, there have been
significant developments that have positively impacted education. The most significant
development has been online learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the expectations of what
online learning looked like changed (Aristovnik et al., 2023). Before the pandemic occurred,
many individuals had no respect for the value of online learning. The shift showed that educators
could deliver the same content online and personalize it for all students. This allowed students to
become successful in their academic studies (Zheng et al., 2021). Since the pandemic and the
expectations of online learning, many educational institutions offer more online programs to
meet the needs of all learners.
Current Issues Facing the Field
Shrum and Sumerfield (2018) share that a concerning issue is digital equity and digital
inclusion which is also known as the digital divide. The digital divide is used to explain the gap
between individuals who have easy access to technology and those who do not (Sanders &
Scanlon, 2021). Additionally, it can be hypothesized as access to the computer and the internet,

socioeconomic status, and the ability to use technology based on skill level (van de Werfhort et
al., 2022). Individuals who do not have equal access will experience neglect in educational
opportunities throughout their educational career and beyond (Shrum & Sumerfield, 2018). All
these factors play a significant role in the influence of educational advantages and intensify the
gaps in academic success. Educational institutions, stakeholders, and policymakers need to
address this issue so that all students have access to a quality education and receive the tools and
skills to be successful citizens. To address this issue, many schools have begun providing devices
and Internet hotspots to all students. Shrum and Sumerfield (2018) note the importance of
creating smart partnerships with businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
With the increased amount of technology implemented in classrooms, effective training is
critical. According to Uzorka and Olaniyan (2022), there is an increase in educators to
implement new technology. Due to the importance of technology integration, educational
programs have developed standards and curriculum that requires technology. This has created a
lack of knowledge in understanding the impact technology has on learning (Lawless &
Pellegrino, 2007). For educators to become knowledgeable about various types of technology,
there must be opportunities for professional development. Professional development will
improve the quality of teaching and academic outcomes (Uzorka & Olaniyan, 2022). Successful
professional development can occur when district officials, administrators, and teachers share a
vision of technology and are supportive (Uzorka & Olaniyan, 2022). Educators also need
training on how to use the software and technology along with “technical, pedagogical,
management training” (Curwood, 2011; Gerard et al., 2011; Desantis, 2012; Unger, 2012; Unger
& Tracey, 2013; Avci et al., 2019, p.1 ).
Another concern with the implementation of technology is student safety. Technology
has many benefits for communication and learning but poses dangers (Bacack et al., 2022).

Students can easily be exposed to inappropriate content, dangerous information, cyberbullying,
harassment, and the leak of private information (Aftab, 2000; Bacack et al., 2022). Data
protection and safety continue to grow as school districts implement more technology
(Zimmerle, 2021; Bacack et al., 2022). According to Jones et al (2023), educational institutions
have created internet safety and digital citizenship programs to improve online safety. Educators
and administrators should implement safety lessons so students can foster skills for respectful
online behavior and bring light to how their actions online can be harmful. Even though students
can navigate many modes of technology, it is important to display ethical and responsible use of
technology (Bacak et al., 2022).
Emerging Trends in K12 from a Global Perspective
Even with all the access to technology, emerging trends are still on the rise. A global
trend that is on the rise is Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to Chassignol et al (2018), AI
has a strong impact on society and the education system. AI is used in education including
human-like tutor software and teaching robots. AI can create lesson plans, schedules, skill-
building, and mimic the actions of an educator It also provides personalization for students,
programming teachers’ routines, and creating powerful assessments (Seo et al., 2021). The
purpose of AI is to strengthen human relationships and complete tasks that humans don’t want to
do (Robert & Muscanell, 2023). AI is not supposed to replace traditional education but many
fear that it will (Chassignol et al., 2018). With AI becoming an integral part of the world, it will
become a valuable tool in education.
Another emerging trend is HyFlex. HyFlex refers to a learning environment that gives
students the option to choose between online or in-person instruction (EDUCAUSE Horizon
Report). HyFlex is designed to give students an option on how they want to learn. It is a learning
system that provides students with autonomy because it meets students' psychological needs.

Students who choose to participate in the HyFlex model continue to have high academic
performance, but students must make good choices and be responsible for their schooling
(Mentzer et al., 2023). With the continued rise of technological advances, many students may
choose the HyFlex learning environment if it fits their needs. However, if educational institutions
choose to offer HyFlex learning environment, then they must ensure equitable learning
opportunities for remote and in-person students (EDUCAUSE Horizon Report).
Another emerging trend is virtual reality (VR). Virtual reality refers to computer-
simulated environments that resemble physical people, objects, or sensory experiences (Freeman,
et al., 2017; Shrum & Sumerfield, 2018). Virtual reality can offer students irreplaceable and
engaging learning experiences that traditional educational resources cannot (Riner et al., 2022).
VR allows students to participate in virtual field trips with hands-on learning without leaving
their classroom (Shrum & Sumerfield, 2018) Students are engaged and are exposed to STEM
opportunities, the ability to make new connections, and see a world outside of the classroom
(Rinter et al., 2022). Virtual reality can only be successful with appropriate materials, funding,
training, and pedagogical strategies for implementation.
Future Directions in Education
The future direction of educational technology is on the rise. With the high demand for
technology and rapid updates, innovative programs and tools are in the works that will change
the landscape of education. The three ideas or tools that will impact education are smart desks,
gamification, and cloud computing.
Smart desks are powered by AI technologies. Smart desks can detect inattentive students.
The desk is designed with processors, cameras, and a touch screen. It will be able to detect

sleepiness, eye movement, and face direction. Teachers would be provided with interactive
smartboards to support teaching while the smart desks are to support learning (Doan et al., 2023).
They also allow the teacher to display visuals on the desk screen and students are never lost. For
smart desks to be successfully implemented, educators would need training on how to use them
and present them in a classroom. It would change the traditional landscape of how a desk
typically works in today’s classroom.
Gamification is another trend for the future of education. Gamification is the use of
game-like qualities that are used in a non-gaming activity (Deterding et al., 2011; Shrum &
Sumerfield, 2018). Another definition coins it as the “application of game design elements in a
non-game context, purposely to promote desired behaviors or solve problems” (Zichermann &
Cunningham, 2014; Ofosu-Ampong, 2020, p. 1). Video games and digital games are extremely
popular for learners which is why it is trickling into the classroom. It is a new way to promote
engagement, collaboration, and motivation (Shrum & Sumerfield, 2018) Many teachers are
already implementing gamification in the classroom through game-based software that is being
pushed in the classroom. For teachers to implement this effectively, teachers need training to
learn how to implement it effectively (Ragni et al., 2023).
Cloud computing is another future direction for education. Cloud computing is quick
access through the internet to computer resources, applications, servers, data, and networking
abilities (IBM, n.d). Cloud computing brings convenience to education. Cloud computing will
improve education by developing teaching resources and allowing them to be shared with other
educators. It will also allow students to work collaboratively on activities without being present
in the classroom (Zhang, 2023). Teachers and students will enjoy cloud computing because data
and files are easily accessible for everyone to use and learn the materials.
Safeguards

As technology continues to advance, it is important to promote safeguards to keep
privacy and prevent data breaches from occurring. It is also important to promote digital
citizenship so students can be safe users in the technological world. The Bible shares the
following: “Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from
it” (King James Bible, 1769/n.d., Proverbs 22:6). Even though this refers to parents raising their
children, it still applies to educators teaching students digital safety. No matter what choices or
journeys they take, the foundation will never leave them.
To ensure digital safety educators need to provide explicit instruction in digital
citizenship. Students must also know how to operate and use technology ethically and
responsibly through effective modeling. Digital citizenship and safety must start at an early age
because waiting until they get older is setting them up for failure. When safety is modeled and
enforced, technology can be integrated effectively (Bacack et al., 2022).
Overall, technology is a great asset for administrators, educators, and students to use in
the classroom. However, individuals in the education system must take a balanced approach to
approach the challenges and possibilities that technology can have in the classroom. This can be
achieved by staying on top of the trends, providing professional development to ensure effective
implementation, and providing safeguards.
