Math Lesson: Use Double Facts
Lesson Objectives:
CCSS2.OA.B.2- Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
Learning Targets: Use doubles facts as a strategy for finding sums near
double facts.
I Can Statements:
I can mentally add math facts within 20.
Rationale: Students in second grade are learning how to fluently add and
subtract within 20 using different mental strategies. This lesson will help
students to learn a new mental strategy to help them with their addition
fluency. This strategy helps students develop their understanding of the
relationships between numbers. Throughout, the lesson students will have
the opportunity to apply the doubles strategy with hands on activities and
working with partners to write and solve doubles addition facts and to apply
that strategy for doubles +1 facts. At the end of the lesson, students will be
assessed on how they do on the independent work.
Engage:
Have students make a double on their domino sheet, pass their domino
to a partner and have the partner write out the doubles addition fact and
solve on their whiteboards.
Explore:
Have students use math talk to focus on their understanding of why
certain facts are called doubles facts. Discuss with students that in a doubles
fact the numbers being added are the same.
Explain:
Discuss that students will use doubles as another strategy to find sums
for near doubles facts. Show students when they add one more dot to their
domino, they now have a doubles +1 fact. Explain to students that a double
of 5+5= 10 and explain two near doubles facts would be 5+6= 11 and
5+4=9.
Elaborate:
Have students add one more dot to their domino, pass their domino to a
partner and have the partner solved the doubles +1 fact on their whiteboards.
Evaluate:
Students will be given a doubles fact 4+4=8 and be asked to write two
near doubles facts (4+5=9 and 4+3=7). Students will also be assessed using
their independent workbooks to determine if they are able to use the doubles
fact as a strategy for finding sums.
