Project 1
Yearly Plan for Professional Development
August
Topic: Number and Operations
Description: I will start this personal development with the teachers in their grade
level teams. I will give them a few minutes to talk about how they taught this topic last
year. I will then use the strategy of one stay and the rest stray (one person from each
grade level stays at table stays and the rest go and create new mixed grade level
groups). The groups will now share what each grade talked about. This will give each
grade level an idea of how the previous grades taught the topic. I will then bring the
group back together and as a group we will complete a chart on what gaps were found
at each grade level. This will help the teachers as they start teaching the topic. This
should also help each grade teach the concept in the same way to reduce the gaps.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
September
Topic: Task Selection
Description: I would explain the importance of task selection and how it applies to
the students' engagement and learning of the topic. I would give them some examples
of tasks that are cognitively demanding as well as tasks that fit different purposes
(introduction to topic, memorization or putting all the topic together). I would then give
them time with their grade level counterparts to come up with some tasks that they want
to implement. I would circulate to assist teachers with finding appropriate tasks within
the curriculum.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
Project 1
October
Topic: Algebra
Description: I will have a grade level algebra problem at white boards around the
room labeled by grade. In grade level groups I will have the teachers complete their
grades problem. I will give them time to work out the problems, then I have one person
from each grade level explain what they did to solve the problem. Each grade level will
get a chance to explain their problem. I will then lead a discussion and fill out a Venn
diagram on how they are solved similarly and differently. I will ask the teachers what
they noticed about the pre-assessment for this topic.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
November:
Topic: Reflecting on Teaching
Description: I will explain to the teachers why it is important that we reflect on our
teaching. I will also go over different ways that we can reflect on our teaching: in groups,
pairs or even independently. I will provide them with examples of each type. I will have
the teachers complete a survey on what they think they do well and one thing that could
work on. I will use this for my informal observation to be able to give them feedback and
support to work toward their improvement. I would also see if anyone would be
interested in observing another teacher /learning walk and giving them feedback. If they
are interested in doing a learning walk I will make the arrangements so their classroom
is covered for them to be able to do this.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
Project 1
December
Topic: Proportions
Description: I will have the teachers at table groups by grade. I will have them
create a problem similar to what their students would see in the classroom on a poster
size post-it. Once they are done, I will have them hang them and take turns explaining
what the exception in their grade level is and what strategy they use to teach it. This will
lead us to a discussion in what gaps are the students coming to them with that the
previous grade could focus on. We would also look at pre-assessment data on this topic
to help assess previous grades areas to focus on.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
January
Topic: Writing in the math classroom
Description: The goal of this personal development will be to assist teachers in
adding math prompts to the classroom. Math prompts are a part of the yearly
standardized assessment and are often where many of the students lose points. I will
bring some previous math writing samples with me to personal development. I will put
the teachers into grade level groups. I will then pass out 3 samples and have them
score them like we would on the standardized test. I would then lead a discussion on
why they scored the writing the way they did. This would lead to me introducing some
strategies for the teachers to use to improve their writing skills. I would give the teachers
an example format that they could apply to any problem in the daily routine for the
students to gain practice.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
Project 1
February
Topic:Geometry
Description: I would start with a discussion on what aspect of geometry each
grade level teaches. I would then have each grade fill out a diagram on the board
stating what the students are struggling with the most, that might be able to be
addressed more in the previous grade. I will then give them time to find or create some
hands-on activities that could be used during the geometry unit. I would provide some
samples as a reference.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
March
Topic: Manipulatives
Description: Showing teachers how to utilize manipulatives in the classroom
setting and small groups. I plan on bringing manipulatives to the personal development
and teaching them a lesson using the manipulatives. I will then have several questions
of various topics for the teachers to try to solve with the manipulatives, this will allow
them to pick topics that they specifically teach to try. I will circulate and assist with
figuring out how to utilize the manipulatives to solve the problems.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
April
Topic: Probability
Description: As the teachers come into personal development I would have a
survey question on the board. I would have a magnet for the teachers to move to
answer the question. We would look at the data together. Teachers would then share
Project 1
what they expect their students to be able to do with the data. We would discuss any
data we have to see what gaps there are and discuss what we could do to close the
gap.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
May
Topic: Reflection
Description: I would provide the teachers with time to independently fill out a form
where they find one thing they felt they did well and one thing that they would do
differently next year. I would then have teachers pair up and share with someone in
their same grade, then switch and pair up someone in a different grade. Each time they
pair up I will give them time to discuss and give each other feedback.
Role of Administrator: Administrator will be there to observe and add input.
