RUNNING HEAD: READING SUMMARY 1 2
Part 1
The themes that are current throughout unit 1 are all about the children. These articles
can help teachers and parents learn more about the development of children. All these
articles have a focus on early childhood. Unit 1 is all about building a strong foundation.
When the children are young you have to start with the foundation. “ Any builder will tell
you if you want a structure to stand for many years, even centuries, you must initially do
significant foundation and preparation work before the first stone, steel beam, or load of
concrete is set” (Paciorek, 10). This is the same for early childhood education, you have
to start with the foundation that is strong if you want it to last.
Article 1.1
We all know that children need time to play during the day. This article talks
about the importance of allowing kindergartners to play at some point during the day. In
schools today there is a lot more teacher led academic coursework and no so much of
play-based learning. How are we going to expect children to focus and learn different
social skills if there is mostly teacher let academic coursework and hardly any play?
“Research has consistently shown classrooms that offer children the opportunities to
engage in play-based and child-centered learning activities help children grow
academically, socially, and emotionally” (Christopher Brown, 12). This article
essentially advocates for play-based learning throughout the school day for
kindergartners. Although it is important for kindergartners it is also important for other
children as well.
