Podcast Assignment
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to propose the implementation of podcasts as a valuable educational tool
within our school/workplace environment. Podcasts have gained immense popularity in recent
years, and I believe that harnessing this medium can significantly enhance our teaching and
learning experiences. In this letter, I will provide a comprehensive summary of what podcasts
are, discuss podcast best practices, and present compelling research-based recommendations on
how podcasts can be optimally utilized in an educational setting.
Podcasts can be defined as an “online audio publication designed to be downloaded and
listened to on a mobile device such as tabs, smartphones, and laptops” (Ibrahim, 2022, p. 324).
Podcasts cover a wide range of topics and can vary in format, from interviews and panel
discussions to scripted narratives and educational content. What sets podcasts apart is their
accessibility, as they can be consumed on various devices, such as smartphones, computers, or
tablets. Listeners have the flexibility to choose when and where they tune in, making podcasts a
convenient and engaging way to access information and entertainment. “The term “podcast” is
derived from two technologies, “iPod” and “podcasting”” (Ibrahim, 2022, p. 324). Its origin
began in the early 2000s when Apple’s iPod popularized the consumption of audio content on
portable devices.
However, podcasts are now widely accessible, “in 2014, there were 7 billion total Apple
podcast downloads, 10.5 billion in 2016, 13.7 billion in 2018, and in March of 2018 Apple
Podcasts jumped to 50 billion total podcast downloads and streams” (Ibrahim, 2022, p. 324).
Heggie and Croston presented five reasons for the rapid growth of podcasts, “Internet activity is
pervasive and a common activity throughout the world, broadband technology has grown rapidly

enabling large files to be downloaded, the multimedia personal computer has become
commonplace, the distinction between streaming and downloading material has begun to blur,
and finally, there’s been a rapid growth in iPod and MP3 adoption” (2023). Podcasts have
become extremely popular due to their easy accessibility and widespread availability.
Incorporating podcast best practices, not only enhances the overall quality and appeal of
educational podcasts, but also establishes a compelling and engaging medium that fosters a sense
of community, reinforces brand identity, and maximizes the educational impact on learners or
employees. Welcoming phrases serve as a metaphorical front door to a podcast, creating an
immediate connection with the audience. These phrases set the tone for engagement, inviting
listeners to immerse themselves in the upcoming content. As such, thoughtful send-off phrases
provide closure to the audience while expressing gratitude and leaving the audience with a
positive impression.
Music plays a pivotal role in the podcasting experience. Consistent and well-chosen
introductory music not only creates a distinctive identity for the podcast but also sets the mood
for what follows. Closing music serves as a signal that the episode is ending, offering a smooth
transition for the audience. When used correctly, music becomes a powerful took for enhancing
the emotional impact of the content and establishing a memorable brand.
Consistency is the foundation of a successful podcast. Regularly scheduled episodes,
delivered in a predictable format, helps to build a loyal audience. The audience should never
have to think about when a new episode is going to drop, maintaining consistency contributes to
listener expectations and satisfaction. A well-organized content structure, with a balance between
information and entertainment, ensures that the podcast remains engaging and valuable over

time. These practices not only contribute to the overall enjoyment of the podcast but also
enhance its educational impact, making it a valuable tool in our educational setting.
Oslawski-Lopez and Kordsmeier presented their own best practices for the best use of
podcasts with students. Firstly, Oslawski-Lopez and Kordsmeier suggested “if instructors assign
podcasts as “reading,” they should also provide students access to both the audio content and the
written transcript” (2021, p. 344). Students have their own preferences, which they occasionally
alter to access content, and some may require options that are easily accessible. Another best
practice presented by the authors is for instructors to “explicitly teach students how to best
engage with podcasts” (Oslawski-Lopez & Kordsmeier, 2021). This could include the students
reading a transcript of the audio, listening to the podcast without doing other tasks, or taking
notes while listening to the audio.
The integration of podcasts into educational settings serves as a transformative strategy,
fostering enhanced accessibility, personalized learning experiences, and heightened engagement
among students. By leveraging the dynamic and versatile nature of podcasts, educational
institutions can effectively adapt to diverse learning styles, cultivate a sense of inclusivity, and
optimize the educational impact in the digital age. According to Ibrahim, “podcasting is a useful
supplement to the classroom experience because it offers flexibility and caters to different
learning styles, using podcasts in education achieves better learning outcomes than surface
approaches such as memorization of lecture material and the reproduction of the lecturer’s
knowledge” (2022, p. 327). In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, embracing innovative
and dynamic tools is imperative for fostering enriched learning experiences.
Podcasts offer an unprecedented level of accessibility, transcending the constraints of
traditional learning environments. Students can access educational content at their convenience,

breaking free from rigid schedules. According to Heggie and Croston (2023), “podcasting offers
innovative and creative opportunities to support learning by creating flexible, learner-controlled
audio file, with the potential for broadcasting information on a range of subjects” (p. S5).
Whether students choose to read podcast transcripts, listen to the audio, or engage in a
combination of both, the flexibility accommodates various learning styles and preferences. This
adaptability contributes to a more inclusive educational environment.
The adaptability of podcasts allows for the creation of tailored content catering to varied
academic interests and learning paces. Students can choose topics that resonate with them,
facilitating a more personalized and engaging learning experience. According to Heggie and
Croston (2023), “podcasting provides the learner with ‘bite-size’ learning, which then enables
key skills to be developed, such as communication skills, time management, problem solving,
critical and analytical thinking” (p. S5). This individualization fosters a sense of ownership over
one’s learning journey, potentially leading to increased motivation and retention of information.
Podcasts, with their conversational and narrative format, possess a unique ability to
captivate and sustain student interest. By integrating storytelling, expert interviews, and real-
world examples, educational podcasts can transform complex subjects into engaging narratives.
“Media can help engage students, given that students find media content more exciting,
interesting, and preferable than textbook reading” (Oslawski-Lopez & Kordsmeier, 2021). This
not only makes learning more enjoyable but also reinforces comprehension and retention.
Podcasts have the potential to revolutionize our educational and professional
development efforts. Their adaptability, engaging format, and accessibility make them a valuable
addition to our learning and training strategies. By implementing the best practices discussed and

drawing from the research-based recommendations, we can create a dynamic and effective
educational podcasting program.
