Science Article Review: Professional Development Assignment
The journey to becoming a teacher is full of joy, love, and continued learning.
Professional development (PD) is one in the category of continued learning. This paper will be
looking at an article titled, Effective Professional Development in Implementation Processes –
the Teachers' View. This article will define professional development as well as give us the view
of what educators think about how much professional development is required.
The article shares a hyperlink that directs you to a different site that explains that
professional development is a learning process that is continuous or career-long. It involves the
learning of diverse activities, refinement of professionals, and enhance research developed
reflective practices. (2015). Many school districts have days planned throughout the school year
for professional development. These days are research-based trainings on everything from
student emotional support to specific subjects such as Science.
The article expounds on the study of PD and the views of the educators. How they felt. If
they believed that it was beneficial. The authors talk about the interviews that were performed.
The evidence given in the interviews was studied and scientific recommendations were provided.
Ehlert (2023) infers that the correspondence is high in scientific recommendations in the areas of
coherence, collective participation, and active learning (para 8).
Some studies have shown that PD should be subject- specific and didactic, such as
science or reading, and not a broad-subject area such as classroom management or student
behaviors. They also observe that PD could also be focused on what the educator specifically
needs rather than generalized topics. For example, if the teacher is a first-year teacher, then they
need training on the procedures of the school, classroom management, or what steps to take
when talking to a parent. If, however, the teacher has ten years of experience or more, then they

will not need those same trainings. Perhaps they need more training or development in new
techniques in certain subject areas like science, reading, math, or supporting learning disabled
students.
It appears that the teachers views on PD varies. The math and science teachers, for
example, appreciate discussions the include classroom application or networking with other
teachers. This could mean a science teacher networking with a reading teacher. Lessons that
include weather could be synced so that they are learning about weather patterns and reading
about weather.
The following hypothesis were developed: (2023) “Which PD features do teachers view
as effective? What reasoning underlies teachers’ views of effective PD? And How do teachers’
views of effective PD relate to scientific recommendations?” To get to the answers of these
hypothesis samples of interviews were studied. The researchers compiled all of the data studying
what the teachers preferred and why they preferred certain PDs.
It was concluded that teachers would prefer the time of PD to be around 7 hours in total.
Teachers also expressed that the outcomes of PD be geared towards measures to relieve allowing
teachers workload to decrease rather than increase. The teachers interviewed appeared to put less
focus on learning outcomes. They failed to mention if PD outcomes had any increase to their
knowledge or personal and professional growth.
The conclusion of the study says that on one hand researchers and PD facilitators will
now be able to be more responsive to the needs of the teacher, designing PD’s that will benefit
the teacher. The study also points to the importance of communicating the standards researched
to better help the teacher (para 37).

It appears that they views of PD are varied. Some teachers are in favor while others
would like to have some incentives added. These incentives could be financial or addition
support. PD can be a good tool when used effectively. If research shows that a certain training is
not working, then the facilitators should step back and apply a new strategy. Luke 6:40 says, “A
disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher
(ESV).” This could fit well with PD. The teacher could become a more effective teacher through
PD and support.
