Introducti on
All forms of media have bias. It is something that a reliable source will try to limit and be
transparent with. “My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show
favoritism.” James 2 2:2, NIV. The Lord wishes us to be wary of bias and favoritism. It can cloud judgment
and data. Ultimately, affecting the solutions developed to solve the problem. For example, if an
institution made policies developed by one professor, who was planning on retiring. The information
received could be very passive and leave matters unchanged. However, many other workers are unhappy
and demand change.
Percepti ons of gendered challenges in academia: How women academics see gender
hierarchies as barriers to achievement
This article is from Gender, Work & Organization (GWO), an academic journal published by
Wiley. The journal has been active for around 30 years. It focuses on multiple gender topics, such as
identity, activism, gendered power, gender gap, etc. The authors focus on how women perceive their
work, challenges, and aspirations. A questionnaire composed of questions on the work environment,
work satisfaction, stress, academic duties, tasks and resources, and thoughts on gender equality. Then
focused on perceptions of gender equality at work. In addition, there was a question on what the
participants thought could help increase the number of women in top academic and leadership
positions.
ACE Summit Refi nes Strategies to Advance Women in Higher Educati on Leadership
ACE gathered a group of college presidents, leaders, and associations last month in Washington,
DC, to address the gender disparity in higher education leadership. The website article is published by
the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE is a membership organization that works in the higher
education community to shape policies and foster innovative, high-quality practice. It discusses three
3
methods that they believe will help further women in higher education leadership. The first model
focuses on learning about college presidents. Former and current presidents would be how they
achieved and worked toward the role and their decisions to step down. The second is having institutions
assess their ability to achieve leadership success, as well as being more forthcoming about candidacy.
Finally, the last model helps boards redesign their selection process, to make it more inclusive.
Empowering women in educati on
This article was published by a member of the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA). This is a
professional association that aims to improve all forms of education. The article discusses how the group
and community leaders have been educating the public school system on gender equality. They hope to
highlight issues in the school system as a workplace and in their education of students.
Discussion
The different media analyzed were an academic journal article, an education news article, and.
The academic article is a credible valuable source from a long-standing journal. Most research journals
do their best to remain impartial. However, the journal’s entire aim is to solve gender inequality. This
goal is biased as it assumes wherever the study is done has a problem. The article mentioned was done
in Norway, which is considered a leader in gender equality policies. The GWO journal article focuses on
how women perceive their situations, which is extremely hard to measure. Any measurement of a
feeling or concept can never be 100% accurate as the participant could have lied or been influenced
somehow. Other variables that may affect women in this way are not considered. A few of the authors'
references are from other articles in the same journal. This is not a horrible decision and is common, but
the goal of the journal is to stop inequality. Any article submitted would have the same general bias, not
only that but one of the authors uses another of their articles as a reference.

The education news article shows the perspective of policymakers. They have developed
strategies and techniques to reduce inequality. Policymakers are often adjacent to problems. They see
the statistics and data but have no personal say in the matter. Their main goal is to make sure of legality.
Unfortunately, that means the resolution can be slow and bumpy. The NJEA article’s perspective focuses
on collaborating with the community. Solving problems by giving women the tools they need to succeed
and educating them on the issues. The strategy is not bad, but the community focus could make niche
strategies. It could be harder to apply to others. The focus on work does not mean that it would translate
well into other fields, such as learning for female students.
Despite media having bias, they are all credible sources. All have done research in education for
years and have good reputations. No source comes without any bias. The following sources were
transparent in their goals and aspirations. The researcher should be able to discern bias to give a
thorough understanding of their work. Referencing different sources and perspectives can result in bias
but they all serve the purpose of collecting information or data.
