Cool math games is a website I enjoyed exploring all of what they offer because. Their
site looks so child friendly and almost like a video game site. If I was a child I would have liked
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 2
to play on this site. There are a variety of math games to play that cover many areas of math con-
cepts from number mini golf, algebra, learning numbers and much more. It kind of reminds me
of pac man or nintendo games. This website allows for children to play games which is what
they love to do after school but the difference is that they would be learning as well. They help
develop skills sets. They introduce it in a fun and interactive way engaging students to enhance
their strategy in which you can manipulate numbers. In order to gain full access to all that the
site has to offer, you would need a subscription. That does not mean that you can’t enjoy some
things that you don't need a subscription for. The Estimation-Hundreds game is a great interac-
tive resource where students get to match numbers to the nearest hundreds place. They do this by
first clicking on a number, then clicking on another number that appears closest to the hundreds
place. The Interactivate site collaborates clusters of creative ideas in the areas of science and
mathematics. This site offers lesson plans, different creative activities to do with your students,
and discussion boards. This is a great site for parents especially teachers, sometimes teachers
need fresh new ideas for lesson planning and activities; this site will definitely help with that cre-
ativity teachers need to keep students engaged while still learning.
Figure This is a family oriented math website. What is so interesting about this site, is
that it was designed for parents to gain new ideas to incorporate math in their everyday life. This
is especially helpful for children that struggle in math and need more help in areas. I also feel if
you make math fun and have students understand that understanding concepts in math is useful,
children would want to listen. This site allows Parents/Guardians to use these ideas expressed on
the site and show their children the concepts of math. Seeing Theory is a site that displays learn-
ing in a different approach through math games. It helps the viewers visualize math in a more
vivid way through statistics and probability. When you first open the site it’s appearance seems
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 3
to be geared towards an older group of students such as middle and high school students espe-
cially because of the content being taught. Another site that is aimed to teach middle and high
school students as well as having a similar approach is Random Services (APPS). This site
teaches probability statistics and stochastic processes. This site offers consulting, education,
training and software development. Base- Ten Blocks is a virtual library that is aimed towards
students grades 3-5. Having a virtual library for students is so cool and an even cooler part about
it is that it also has an APP. This app can be downloaded on a mobile device which is a great way
for students to practice and stay educated on the go using virtual manipulatives.
Illuminations is a NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) website that
offers interactive games, mobile games, lesson plans for grades Pre-k-12, brain teasers and much
more. What is especially great is that this site offers new content every month for teachers, all
they have to do is signup. The ARC Center site works with schools and districts to provide sim-
ilar content in elementary mathematics curriculum. This is important because a lot of times sites
are fun, but they are not exactly what is being taught in class. This site also supports teacher edu-
cation and teacher tools for their growth and in turn the growth they spill onto their students.
This website also offers free valuable educational materials and information for teachers as well.
Show-Me Center website provides middle school teachers with current curriculum tools and
materials to use for their lesson; as well as offering teaching strategies and techniques to use on
their students. They show teachers how to use these given resources and how to implement them
into their lessons. This site also gives guidance to teachers in other ways such as; improving their
leadership skills, classroom management skills, and much more qualities a teacher must possess
in order to be successful.
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 4
Writing and Communication in Mathematics is a site that helps undergraduate students
learn to speak and write in the area of mathematics. This is a great way to get students more
comfortable and confident in expressing themselves in the area of mathematics. The Interna-
tional Study Group on Ethnomathematics website was created by math professionals that
helps to address cultural diversity in the classroom. A subject that many teachers need help in
addressing and incorporating more within the classroom. Defeat the fraction monster is cre-
ated to help make fraction learning fun and less confusing. It also helps to ease the confusion of
learning to understand other math areas such as division and multiplication. I like how this site
offers teachers materials and lesson ideas to be printed and use within their classrooms for
small group activities and whole group instruction. Association of Teachers of Mathematics is a
website to help teachers and aspiring individuals that want to be teachers learn how to teach
math. This site also offers instructional resources, training sessions and a community geared to-
wards interested people wanting to teach math. Count US In helps teachers, students and par-
ents learn Math. This site helps teachers create lessons in creative ways using video games,
classroom resources and updates them on current events. As for students this site allows chil-
dren to use this site to play educational games, and even promotes students to enter to win
prizes. This site is also geared to help parents support their children.
The national council of Teachers of Mathematics (COMAP) is a nonprofit organization
that aims to help all ages of children understand and lean math. The organization is titled: The
Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications. What makes this organization unique is that
they create curriculums for teachers and parents to follow and teach to their students/children.
They gain their knowledge through research based practices to insure their methods are effec-
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 5
tive for student growth. This organization does require a fee, which is the down side; but I see it
as, most people pay for math tutors, you will have one at your disposal anytime you need assis-
tance. I would also like to add that this subscription which allows for full access also comes with
resources, textbooks and materials. If the child/student curriculum needs materials this site will
provide it. Arithmetic Four is a site that has students practice math concepts. It shows students
what whole numbers are and integers through games. Math Playground is a site that has an in-
teresting concept. The idea is it allows students to play with a friend. Designing this idea, helps
students strengthen their social skills with a peer while learning whole number addition and in-
teger multiplication. Another great idea about this site is that it gets harder and harder as you
pass levels. It does a good job of challenging students abilities. This site has tabs that students
and teachers can manipulate. The learner can click on a tab to have the directions explained to
him or clues to help him/her solve the problem. Teacher can manipulate the games to fit the
students individual needs. It is a bonus to have teachers modify games to fit that students spe-
cific needs in which he might be struggling in and may need more help in that specific area of
math.
Jefferson Lab Math Games site has many options for students can learn math concepts.
This site has basic math concepts, to inequalities, and place value games. This site has interest-
ing concepts for kids to be more engaged in math with their mystery math and Nim number
game that a student can play with a friend. I was happy to have seen PBS on the list of sites.
PBS kids was a channel I loved to watch in the morning as a child. PBS is a website that provides
kids and parents with a variety of cool educational content. This site also allows teachers to
place their ideas to parents on ways to teach kids at home. How can parents bring the class-
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 6
room dynamic into their homes and continue learning. Teachers provide parents with different
ways to teach their children no matter their grade level and incorporates lesson plans as well
for parents to go by. It also expresses different ways to engage students when in the classroom
setting for teacher knowledge. This site is a fun and creative resource that I one day want to use
with my children. The Maze Game is a site that is geared towards children that are older so the
concepts in the area of mathematics are more advanced. In order for children to make sense of
this site and use it to help them, they must have basic prior knowledge in mathematics. Learn-
ing math by using a maze is a creative and engaging way for students to learn how graphing
concepts work. This site helps students locate coordinates on a graph.
Top 5 Links
There were several links that I found interesting to use when teaching in the classroom,
for parents to use and educators. I enjoyed reading websites that show unique and creative ways
to be more engaging with your students, rather than only in the traditional sense of the teacher in-
structing what needs to be learned. The top 5 links that I found useful were the sites that focused
on interactive approaches to learning and games for the students to learn and improve their indi-
vidual needs within the area of math.
The first site I thought was interesting was Figure This. I love that this is a family ori-
ented math website. What is so interesting about this site, is that it was designed for parents to
gain new ideas to incorporate math in their everyday life. It encourages families to interact with
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 7
their children. This is especially helpful for children that struggle in math and need more help in
areas. I also feel if you make math fun and have students understand that understanding concepts
in math is useful, children would want to listen. This site allows Parents/Guardians to use these
ideas expressed on the site and show their children the concepts of math. In the area of math it
may be hard for some parents to even know where to begin with helping their children compre-
hend math concepts, especially new concepts in math. Another thing to think about, there are
children whom are non-complaint and will not want to work on math concepts after school is fin-
ished. This website alters this perception for both parents and students. It allows for parents to
engage with their children in different ways in order to get their child/children wanting to work
on math. It gives parents different interactive ideas on how to introduce math to them and draw
them in.
Cool Math Games is a site that is really inviting for children. It does a great job of sup-
plying various resources for students to be focused in the area of math while still learning. looks
so child friendly and almost like a video game site. If I was a child I would have liked to play on
this site. There are a variety of math games to play that cover many areas of math concepts from
number mini golf, algebra, learning numbers and much more. It kind of reminds me of pac man

sets. They introduce it in a fun and interactive way engaging students to enhance their strategy in
which you can manipulate numbers. In order to gain full access to all that the site has to offer,
you would need a subscription. That does not mean that you can’t enjoy some things that you
don't need a subscription for. This site also helps teachers asses where exactly the student needs
more work in.
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 8
The Maze Game is another site developed to help older students with more advanced
math concepts. In order for children to make sense of this site and use it to help them, they must
have basic prior knowledge in mathematics. Learning math by using a maze is a creative and en-
gaging way for students to learn how graphing concepts work. This site helps students locate co-
ordinates on a graph.
Math Playground is a site that has an interesting concept. The idea is it allows students
to play with a friend. Designing this idea, helps students strengthen their social skills with a peer
while learning whole number addition and integer multiplication. Another great idea about this
site is that it gets harder and harder as you pass levels. It does a good job of challenging students
abilities. This site has tabs that students and teachers can manipulate. The learner can click on a
tab to have the directions explained to him or clues to help him/her solve the problem. Teacher
can manipulate the games to fit the students individual needs. It is a bonus to have teachers mod-
ify games to fit that students specific needs in which he might be struggling in and may need
more help in that specific area of math. One of the most helpful websites for me personally was
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. I enjoyed exploring this site because it offers
specific lesson planning materials, concepts, activities for teachers. I enjoy when there are re-
sources for teachers to use to help create and build their teachings through creative concepts and
ideas. There are many teachers out there that start to run out of ideas, especially if they have been
teaching for many years. Having sites that are fresh and new helps teachers freshen up their per-
spective and creative sense.
This assignment helped me realize how many sources there are for educators, parents
and students to use and readily accessible. There are many helpful tools, resources and materi-
als that students can use to better their understanding of math principals and concepts through
ONLINE FIELD TRIP 9
games and activities. A source more parents and students should be made aware of. Selecting
my top five sites were hard to do, because each site, served a specific purpose. The websites
discussed above had one thing in common and that was to better students understanding of
math principals and concepts, but shifting math from transitional learning methods; to fun and
interactive games and activities to do with a peer, in school or with your family. Helpful tips for
educators to use to help with lesson planning, creative activities to do within their own class-
room as well.
