Chapter 6 Video Case: Including Students with High-Incidence Learning Disabilities – Strategies
for Success:
What are some of the supports that the inclusion teacher provides to students in her class?
Describe 3 different supports and how they help those.
The teacher in this video did a great job explaining how she helped her students with
disabilities. I noticed several supports used throughout the classroom. The first one was the
graphic organizers. The teacher used the graphic organizers to take all of her students ideas and
put them down on paper. The format allowed the student to visualy see the ideas laid out to make
writing a paragraph much easier. The second support tool that was used was the computer
(technology). The teacher would give the students a set amount of time on the computer to create
or work on the graphic oorganizers and then print them out. Printing the graphic organizers out is
another wonderful way to use a visual support tool. The stdent can see their work and ideas on
paper making it easier to categorize. The last thing, one which I thought was wonderful, was the
support of the students peers. Instaead of leaving her other students out and feeling less than
equal, the teacher allowed the student with disabilities to explain how they feel and the struggles
they are having. This helps the other students fully understand that there is no favoritism in the
classroom.
If you were a teacher in an inclusion setting, what information would you offer to all students
(with and without disabilities) about the different levels of support students receive to help them
be successful?
Again, I thought that this teachers idea of allowing the student with disabilities to speak
about their struggles gives the rest of the class a better understanding of why they need a little
more attention then the rest. If a student can hear from the student with disabilities, the struggles

that child faces and their fears, the student without disabilities will be more understanding. In the
video, the teacher told her class that if we water a cactus as much as we water a flower, the
cactus would die. This was a great way to explain to her students that we are all different and
need different types of support to be successful. She also told them that things may not always
appear to be equal, but they are always fair. As an educator it’s important to make a lasting
relationdhip with your students. By doing this we create a learning environment for success and
understanding.
Now consider the biblical approach to special education to inform your thoughts on this topic.
Consider a passage of Scripture to support the fruits of the spirit that would guide your actions as
you collaborated with other teachers.
“Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an
anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the
recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and
the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the
mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;” -Isaiah
35:3-6 ESV
This verse speaks so much truth and yet so many people are unaware. We are to love one
another and treat each other as we want ot be treated. God made us in his image, not all the same,
but with himself in mind. I feel that by allowing my students to fully understand one another and
their own personal struggles, they can see past those differences and be one.
Children with disabilities should not be treated differently, they should be treated the same. They
are just as special as the other child next to them that doesn’t have a learning disability. We can

be supportive and provide help along the way, but as an educator we need to remember that if we
offer to much we set the special needs students up for failure later in life.
