LONG-TERM RETENTION 1
1)After analyzing the teaching video, describe 3 different strategies the teacher used to
facilitate student learning.
The three different strategies the teacher in the video utilizes in her lesson are
assessing student’s progress and learning with summarizing, give students opportunities
to edit their work with feedback from the teacher, and providing concrete steps and
suggestions for student improvement. She also uses nonverbal cues verbal reminders, and
repeated reminders to reinforce the points and prevent her students from potentially
misbehaving. “…effective lessons and good use of class time are not the only means of
preventing or dealing with inappropriate behavior. Besides structuring classes to reduce
the frequency of misconduct, teacher must have strategies for dealing with such problems
when they do occur.” (Pg. 304) The teacher utilizes summarizing to reinforce her points
throughout to ensure the material is absorbed and able to be regurgitated when asked. In
addition to doing that she pairs her calm demeanor and summarizing instruction with
both praise and verbal cues to ensure the students feel involved and stay on task.
2)Imagine you are teaching a lesson on a topic of your choice. Describe the lesson and
articulate what types of teaching/learning strategies you would use to build long-term
retention and to facilitate learning for the students in your own classroom?
If I was teaching any lesson, regardless of the subject matter or the intelligence
level of the students, I would always go with summarizing the lesson at the beginning
with clear, correct, and concise objectives in order to hit the heart of the material. I would
pair this with recapping information at the end of the lesson to reinforce the points and
ensure that learning has occurred. Throughout the lesson I would ensure to provide praise
for correct answers and those who attempt to answer even if wrong. During my Battle

Management Instructor Training (BMIT) we learned about the Law of Primacy. To
summarize, the Law of Primacy showed us that students will normally retain the first
thing that they learned when it comes to assessing learned material at the end of the
lesson. By summarizing the material right off of the bat in a broken down and generic
fashion, I would hope that the students would retain the important information of the
objectives into promoting learning the overall lesson in the long run for retention
purposes.
3)Now consider the biblical approach to education to inform your thoughts on this topic.
Consider a passage of Scripture and/or a fruit of the spirit to support your approach to
implementing these teaching and learning strategies.
“Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it
into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:9, New Internation
Version)
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you
with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8, New Internation Version)
I feel that both of these passages encompass what I am trying to relay in the
ability to promote life-long learning. One thing that the scripture shows that I forgot to
initially post in my response to question number two is the necessity for implementation
through practice for learning. In order to reinforce getting the point across you have to
have the students practice the material. This can be accomplished through quizzes or
question and answer sessions or even homework. By seeing the students try to put what
they learned into action is a great tool for assessing whether learning has occurred inside
the classroom and hopefully carrying on outside of the classroom.

The second piece of scripture highlights the necessity for reinforcement in the
form of praise. By giving positive feedback, you provide a strong foundation that
encourages the students to participate as well as take an active investment in the material
being taught. Even praising effort in just trying provides the core of building a rapport to
build the foundation of education.
