Video Analysis Tool: Long-Term Retention Assignment

1)After analyzing the teaching video, describe 3 different strategies the teacher used to
facilitate student learning.
After watching the video one of the main strategies that the teacher used was summarizing.
Modeling and “explaining the strategy why it's important and then modeling it” (Schunk, 2016,
p. 163). Throughout the video the teacher taught a lesson about summarize to a second grade
audience. The teacher taught the students to stop & think & tell when trying to summerazie
something. She effectively explains and walks the students through the directions for the activity.
Another strategy the teacher used was behavior management by keeping the actively engaged in
the class discussion. There was no room for children to become disruptive. The teacher kept
asking different and random students about the assignment to keep them focused. When she said
“stop & think & tell, she stated “it's important because it's a behavior they need to do
independently”. The final strategy was Think- pair- share, which is one of my favorites. The
teacher asked the students to work with a partner in learning the summarizing strategy. This
strategy is to ge the students to talk about what they have learned so far with with their peers.
2.Imagine you are teaching a lesson on a topic of your choice. Describe the lesson and
articulate what types of teaching/learning strategies you would use to build long-term
retention and to facilitate learning for the students in your own classroom?
“Long-term retention varies a great deal according to the type of information, however. For
example, concepts are retained much longer than names” (Shunk, 2016 p. 146). The lesson I
would teach would be the Marketing mix specifically the 4P’s: Price, Product, Promotion, and
Place. First, I will ask the student “what is marketing?” to see if they remember from earlier
lessons. Then, I will go in to explaining the meaning of and for the 4P’s. I will break the class up

in two groups and give examples of each of the P’s. Once I finished with my examples I will
through out some random one and have the class guess with P it is I’m talking about. Like a
mini game and the team that wins will earn extra points on the next quiz. If the students are
having fun while learning they could remember what they have learned for the long term.
3.Now consider the biblical approach to education to inform your thoughts on this topic.
Consider a passage of Scripture and/or a fruit of the spirit to support your approach to
implementing these teaching and learning strategies.
When teaching children everyday you learn that you are learning a lot from the student. The
disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. (Luke 6:40,
King James Version) Meaning no student is above their teacher, but one day with the proper
training they will become their own master. If children are willing to learn from their teachers
with out being disruptive they will be a great teacher themselves one day. “I can do all things
through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13, King James Version). Once everyone
in the world learn that verse and actually believe in it things in their life would be a little easier.
You have to have the faith in what God is capable of doing. Teaching high schoolers can be very
challenging, but I know with the grace of God and the bible verse I mentioned I can do it.
