QEP DPRP: Research Literature and Theoretical Support
Introduction
[Multigrade classrooms present unique challenges for classroom teachers, as
they are responsible for teaching students of different grade levels simultaneously.
This can lead to difficulties in lesson planning, differentiation of instruction, and
classroom management. This topic is important to the field of education because
multigrade classrooms are becoming increasingly common in schools, mainly in rural
and small schools where resources are limited. According to a study by Anderson and
Pavan (2020), teachers in multigrade classrooms often struggle to provide
individualized instruction to students of different grade levels. This can lead to gaps
in learning and hinder student academic progress. Additional research by Jimenez and
Rodriguez (2019) found that classroom teachers in multigrade settings report higher
levels of stress and burnout compared to teachers in single-grade classrooms. This
highlights the importance of addressing the challenges faced by teachers in multigrade
classrooms to support their well being and effectiveness in the classroom.]
Theoretical Framework
Theory
[Education theory plays a serious aspect in guiding educational research and practice. For the
planned research study on "Challenges faced by classroom teachers in multigrade classrooms: A
case study," the framework of Constructivism will be applied. Constructivism planned by Jean
Piaget, emphasizes that learners construct their understanding and knowledge through active
engagement with their environment (Huitt, 2011). This theory suggests that students learn best
when they are actively involved in the learning process, considering their prior knowledge and
3
experiences.]
Rationale for Using Theory
[The theory of Constructivism is useful as a guiding framework for the research study on
challenges faced by classroom teachers in multigrade classrooms for several reasons. The first
constructivist approach encourages teachers to create hands-on, learning through doing
opportunities that cater to the diverse needs of students in multigrade classrooms. Additionally,
constructivism emphasizes the importance of framing learning experiences to support students in
building upon their existing knowledge and understanding, which can be really beneficial in
multigrade settings where students may have different levels of academic readiness.]
Literature Review
Theme 1
[There has been a growing focus on the work of teachers in multigrade and single-grade
classrooms, various strategies and approaches in improving teacher effectiveness. "Levels of
teacher performance in formative assessment in multigrade and single-grade classrooms" shows
how formative assessment can provide valuable wisdom to teach effectiveness and student
learning outcomes. "Education in rural areas, Multigrade classrooms and Teacher Training"
points out the value of providing teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively
teach in multigrade classrooms, especially in rural areas where resources may be limited.]
Theme 2
["The preparation of teachers for multigrade teaching" explores the need for training
programs that equip teachers with the tools and strategies needed to succeed in multigrade
classroom settings. "Classroom strategies of multigrade teachers" points out the creative and
new approaches that teachers use to engage students and build up learning in multigrade
4
classrooms. "A collaborative approach: assessing the impact of multigrade classrooms" points
out the value of collaboration among teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders in
addressing the challenges faced in multigrade classrooms.
Comparison and Contrast
["Levels of teacher performance in formative assessment in multigrade and single-grade
classrooms," compared the performance of teachers in multigrade and single-grade classrooms
when it comes to formative assessment. The study found that teachers in multigrade classrooms
often struggled to provide individualized feedback to students due to the diverse range of
abilities and grade levels in these classrooms. "Assessing the impact of multigrade classrooms,"
the impact of multigrade classrooms on student achievement and found that, with the proper
support and resources, students in multigrade classrooms can achieve similar outcomes to their
peers in single-grade classrooms. "Education in rural areas, Multigrade classrooms and Teacher
Training," focused on the broader context of education in rural areas and the specific challenges
faced by teachers in multigrade classrooms. "Education in rural areas, Multigrade classrooms
and Teacher Training," focused on the broader context of education in rural areas and the
specific challenges faced by teachers in multigrade classrooms. "Levels of teacher performance
in formative assessment in multigrade and single-grade classrooms," took a more quantitative
approach to the problem.]
Gap in the Literature
[Understanding the individual challenges that teachers go through on a daily
basis is necessary for developing effective training programs, resource materials, and
support systems to help teachers cross the involvement of teaching in a multigrade
classroom. By filling this gap in the literature, the proposed research study has the
