CASE STUDY: POLITICAL ANALYSIS
Who has what power in this Organization? (Reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, referent)?
According to QuickBase 2021, "To briefly recap, in 1959, social psychologists John
French and Bertram Raven identified five bases of power. "Legitimate: a person with formal
authority to demand expert obedience from others. The CEO of Harmoni Schools, for example,
has legitimate power. Reward: A person can compensate another – financially or otherwise – for
complying with their demands. A parent has reward power over his children. Expert: someone
with the knowledge and skills to outperform others; her good judgment is respectful and
expected. A specialist or physician has expert power. Referent: a person is strongly liked and
admired by others and often exerts a charming influence. A celebrity has referent power.
Coercive: A person achieves compliance from others through the threat of punishment. A
military dictator has coercive power." (QuickBase, 2021) In the Harmoni Community School
system, all powers are prevalent on various levels: reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, and
referent power.
The Reward Power of working in Harmoni Community is the high salary and
compensation everyone receives based on their experience and education. Many high-level
positions make six-figure salaries or more, while most teachers are paid based on a pay scale
voted by the board, which is 15,000 more than average public school employees in the state.
Coercive power is present in student-teacher relationships, where students are often "punished'
for negative behavior. Negative behavior that violates the learning environment and is against
school policies. Legitimate powers are with our CEO, who ensures everyone does their job
effectively to make the work environment run smoothly. Expert power belongs to school

psychologists, nurses, and behavior specialists who are experts in their field and support teachers
and students while helping administrators understand the most effective approaches based on
their expertise. The referent power belongs to the teacher of the year or the administrator of the
year, who is a person who is selected by a popular vote their peer based on work performance
and their positive interaction with others.
Who has access to agendas, control over information, knowledge of procedures, and ability to Cope
with uncertainty?
Access to agendas would be to all four Managing officers: Academics, Financial,
Operating, and Bilingual. They use these weekly agendas to ensure their department's domestic
goals. They also control what information goes to where and to whom, depending on the
information. Knowledge of Procedures. Would to the Operations Manager. Even so, all officers
would have this knowledge. The ability to Cope with uncertainty would be everyone in the entire
Organization. We understand now more than ever that life can change in the blink of an eye. The
ultimate decision-maker in the Organization is the CEO. She is also the co-founder, so the last
word comes from her.
Describe the power coalitions and alliances affecting units.
Collaborating to support learning benefits both educative institutions and community agencies...
Enlarging the range of expectations on what students learn and how, where, what, and why is
critical in reaching excellence within various partnerships. Each school within the Harmony
School Organization connects with multiple coalitions and Alliances dedicated to a more
meaningful educational experience. A coalition is two or more people or groups temporarily
working together to achieve a common goal. Harmoni School District affiliates include the

National All-American Coalition of Education Activists (NCEA). This multi-racial Organization
combined origin, teachers, and community members working for essential school reform in the
United States. They have satisfactorily conquered the barriers to teacher-parent oneness and
progress in a new, combined evolution that puts the concern of our offspring first. An alliance is
a relationship between a community, assembly, or states that have fused for standard service or
to obtain some general plan, whether or not a clear contract works.
Partnerships can strengthen, nourish, and even metamorphose the distinctive participator,
raise amended program quality, make more competent, the usefulness of means, and reform the
alignment of goals and curricula (Harvard et al., 2010). Harmoni Schools has partnered with the
Arts & Culture Alliance of the United States, whose mission is to serve and support a diverse
community of student artists, arts organizations, and cultural institutions. The Alliance operates
as aFunifying voiceFrepresenting the arts and culture community to government, businesses, the
media, and the public, benefiting from a thriving arts and culture industry.
How does the unit influence other units and create upward influence in the Organization?
Employees create an upward influence by presenting the core values and benefits of a
chosen solution, solving problems using tools, being proactive, and asking questions that make
sense to create meaningful change in the process of influencing up. Regular "pulse checks" keep
everyone on the same page. The pulse checks are a survey sent out to staff asking various
questions that affect the school's climate. When Harmoni Schools employees give feedback on
what they feel and share, they understand and know what people think, making it easier to make
decisions and address issues. With time, one learns that the CEO makes the decisions; the
PULSE of the Faculty, staff, and students fuels her.

To influence other units, one must lay out the advantage against the expense and hazard
combined with its intended series of actions, concentrate on delivering one's prospects as
objectively as possible, and back them up with investigations when efficacious. This event will
influence one's judgment, and it will also intensify one's leader's self-reliance in workers'
discernment, which will reward dividends the next opportunity one looks for their buy-in and
promote a bond of mutual influenceability, and that is an energetic, collaborative strength.
