4. Literature Integration- Walter’s wonderful web by Tim Hopgood. This book talks about a
spider named Walter who is not the best at making webs so he decided to work on and try
different designs, some include squares, circles, and triangles until he can find the perfect
web!
5. Tiered Activities
“Developing basic fact fluency requires avoiding practices such as rote drill and
timedtests and replacing them with activities that focus on reasoning strategies. Beyond
building fluency and automaticity more effectively, such an approach builds student
number sense and confidence!” (Chapter 9, page 189).
Below: Students who are below or just may not quite grasp the whole lesson will be put into a
small group with a teacher. Once we have figured out which students may need that extra help,
we will then start. There would have a bin of shapes, they will have the chance to play with
them freely for five minutes. After, the teacher will round up the shapes, then the teacher will
pull a shape out one by one and will tell the students what the shape is. Once every single
shape is out of the bin, they will go back in and do it again. Instead of the teacher saying the
name, the students have to work together to figure out the correct name of the shape. Once
the teacher feels confident, they will give a different shape to each child in which they will have
to reply with the correct name of the shape.
On: This group of students will be in their own little group as well. They will have flashcards of
the shapes they are learning and they will have the chance to quiz one another on the shapes.
This is to ensure that they are able to succeed in getting most of the shapes correct. They will
have the opportunity to do it multiple times with their peers. They also can play a match game
and flip the cards over and try to match two of the same cards correctly, they must get the
name right as well. This can be fun and interesting for them to stay engaged with learning their
shapes!
If the students feel confident enough, they can ask a teacher to quiz them with the flashcards.
Above: For the students are where able to pick up on what shapes are which and the correct
name of the shapes every time, they will move on to more advanced shapes and names. They
will be in their own group, they will have blocks of the new shapes as well as advanced
flashcards. The flashcards will have a mix of the new shapes as well as the old shapes too. The
students will work to retain the names of the new shapes and work to correctly get them right
as they are using the blocks and flashcards. If any of those students for some reason feel
confident enough to be quizzed on it, then they may ask their teacher to do so!
6. Integrated Biblical Activity
Students will be in small groups with a variety of cut out shapes. They will mix them around and
each will have a turn to pick and guess the name of the shape. If they guess correctly, they can
flip it around and to show a phrase from the bible that can positively influence them in the long
run. Although this may sound silly but I feel that once they complete each shape and getting to
read a quote such as Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another" or Proverbs
3:5 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart". This is to help remind them how to be kind to others
and themselves!
