How will you get the lesson started? What questions, texts, inquiry, modeling, and/or other techniques will you
use to engage students?
I will start this lesson by explaining to my class that a story answers 5 basic questions which are
also known as the 5 w’s: Who, what, when, where, and why. I will write these five words on the
whiteboard. Next, I will tell my students a short story about the time I lost my dog on vacation.
After telling the story, we will use the whiteboard to answer the five W questions that went along
with my story. For example, I will ask, “Who was the story about?” Students should answer with
“Your dog.” Another question I will ask is “Where did my dog get lost?” They will say “At the
beach.” We will answer and discuss all 5 W’s as a class. Lastly, I will say, “Today we will be
listening to the story, The Three Little Pigs and answering the questions based off the story using
our 5 W’s.
