−Instructional Section: After instruction and expectations are given to the students, I will ask
them to pull out their notebooks and a pencil for notes. Then we will watch a video about arctic
animals. It will also be available in Spanish for ELL learners. After the video is over, we will talk
about what we heard about the different animals in the arctic and how they are different and
similar. As a class we will start a chart about the different animals and their characteristics, then
at their table they will finish the chart. After the class is done with the chart, they will take out
scissors and work on sorting animals if they are arctic or if they are not, they can work as a
group. After they are done sorting, we will move into independent work where students will
have to match animals that are in the arctic with matching their characteristics.
oFor ELL students I will provide worksheets for them in their native language. I will also
have posters with the name of the artic animals in both Spanish and English. I will also
try to sit them next to other students who will are ahead and may be able to help them
if needed.

−Assessment Section:
oPre-Assessment: After watching the informative video about arctic animals, class will
discuss and talk about the different animals and their characteristics. Teacher will be
able to see what students got from the video.
oFormative Assessment/Feedback to Learners: At their table students will cut out
pictures of different animals and work as a group to determine if they are arctic or not.
(guided practice) Students will independently match arctic animals with their correct
characteristics. (Independent practice)

oSummative Assessment: Students will need to match 10/15 arctic animals with
characteristics, name and pictures.

3. Written Report
−The differentiated lesson plan on arctic animals is to help all students learn using different
strategies to help them comprehend and understand vocabulary, facts and contrasting. This
lesson plan is modified to help ELL students grasp the concept and be able to meet expectations
in the classroom. Using different strategies such as a video, groups, charts, and worksheets in
both Spanish and English should help lessen the struggles for ELL students that may be present.
Getting a gauge for student understanding at the beginning of a lesson will allow the teacher to
see where they may need to start their teaching and if any modifications need to be made to
the lesson that day or in the future. Having students work together and having teacher
conferences with students can help both students and teachers with getting feedback on
assignments, making sure students understand what needs to be done and getting clarification
if there is any confusion on what needs to be done. If there is an aide or helper in the class, it
would be beneficial to have them help those that are “stuck”. This will help with student
progress and not let students fall behind because they are struggling and do not have the help
they need. It is important for teachers to know their students and what they can expect from
each one of them. Differentiating instruction helps teachers see the diverse ways students can
learn and what might work best for their class or even just the ELL students. It is also a way to
give all students equal access to learning.
