Comprehension Strategy Demonstration
For this assignment I have chosen to use graphic organizers as my
comprehension strategy for informational text in science. “Teachers can use
graphic organizers as a tool to help students visualize the interconnection
between words to support to support their meaning” (Vacca, 2018, Pg. 227).
There are many different graphic organizers that teachers can use. For
example, a few different graphic organizers a teacher can use would be
KWL charts, Mind Maps and Venn diagrams.
Graphic organizers are a very helpful tool. This is a great way to
visualize the information in an easy-to-understand way that the student can
always come back to. This is a great way to take notes, critical thinking and
to solve problems. With the help of graphic organizers for comprehension in
science text students can understand complex concepts by identifying the
vocabulary, main ideas, supporting details in a science text.
According to the Virginia State Science Standard 4.5, “The student
will investigate and understand that the planets have characteristics and a
specific place in the solar system.” Students will be able to use grade-
appropriate graphic organizers as a comprehension strategy for comparing
the planets in our solar system. Using all the different graphic organizers,
students can understand the differences and similarities between the
planets in the solar system. This strategy will help students retain what they
are learning.
It is very important that I choose a strategy that meets the needs of
my students. Using graphic organizers gives me many different choices to
choose from. Graphic organizers can easily be modified to fit the students’
needs. I have chosen three different organizers that the students will use.
Using different styles can help the students figure out which style works
best for them.
Depending on what grade level and the subject that is being taught
will determine what graphic organizer that will be used. In primary grades
a Venn diagram is a good way for students to compare two things, like
tigers and lions. In elementary grades a bubble chart is a great way to
brainstorm ideas, for example, if a student needs to do a science project
about planets the student can use this to brainstorm about a specific planet.
For middle school students using a context clue worksheet is helpful to
understand what is being taught. Students will write down what they think
a word or phrase means and then they will find context clues in the book to
support their meaning.
