INSTRUCTIONS
For this assignment, you are to consult the provided Tips on How to Write Objectives document to
understand the CPC (Condition, Performance, Criterion) method of formulating properly written
objectives. Using that information, you will rewrite each of the objectives below, correcting any
mistakes you see. You will then give a brief explanation of what was wrong with each objective and how
the changes you made fit the CPC method. Remember that each objective must be written as a single
sentence including all three parts of the CPC method.
For each objective below, include the objective as written, your correction, and your explanation
of how you fixed the objective.
Example:
Objective: Given instruction on reading, the student will understand and/or explain the passage.
Correction: Given the three comprehension strategies (picture clues, context clues, re-reading)
for reading for meaning and a new reading passage, the student will use the strategies to answer
4/5 comprehension questions about the reading passage.
Explanation: The condition needed to be a specific tool I would give them to accomplish the
performance. The performance is measurable because I can identify whether they answered the
comprehension questions correctly. The criterion is appropriate because answering 4/5 questions
correctly is an acceptable level of performance.
Objectives (to be revised):
1.The teacher will teach a lesson about the five food groups.
a.Correction: Given 10 types of foods, the student will classify the foods in the correct
category of food group with 8/10 food classified correctly.
b.Explanation: The condition needed to have what specific tools were needed to
accomplish the performance. The performance is measurable because I can identify
whether they sorted the foods correctly. The criterion is appropriate because answering
8/10 correctly shows a mastery of the curricula.
2.After instruction on the French and Indian War, each student will write a report with 95%
accuracy.
a.Correction: Given teacher instruction on the French and Indian War, the student will
write a 1–2-page essay detailing key events that occurred during the war. The essay must
exhibit the student’s knowledge of events during the war.
b.Explanation: The condition was acceptable. The performance is measurable because I
can read the essay and assess how well a student comprehended the material. The

criterion is appropriate because I will be able to tell which students knew what they were
talking about.
3.Given a list of vocabulary words, each student will learn the meaning of 90% of their vocabulary
words.
a.Correction: Given a list of 10 vocabulary words, the student will match the word to the
correct definition with 8/10 words matched correctly.
b.Explanation: The condition did not have a measurable number of words for the student
to define. Using a method of 8 out of 10 correct is a better measurement of performance
because it has a clear criterion of how many words a student needs to be able to get
correct.
4.Given a quiz, the student will list 8/10 action verbs.
a.Correction: Given a reading passage with 10 action verbs, the student will circle 9/10
action verbs within it.
b.Explanation: The condition needs to be clear on what skill the student will be tested on.
The performance is acceptable because I can measure the number of action verbs the
student was able to correctly identify. The criterion is acceptable because identifying 9
out of 10 verbs correctly is an acceptable level of performance.
5.Given instruction on reading a paragraph, the student will read the paragraph with no mistakes.
a.Correction: Given instruction on reading a paragraph with fluency and a 1-paragraph
reading passage, the student will orally read the paragraph with 3 or fewer pronunciation
errors.
b.Explanation: The condition needs to be specific on the task the student needs to perform.
The performance is measurable because the student will be reading the paragraph to me
and I will be able to note if and where they make an error. The criterion is acceptable
because being able to read a paragraph with 3 or fewer errors is an acceptable level of
performance.
