Introduction
Ever wonder what leads people to make the choices they make or why they believe in
something that may go against your beliefs? Worldviews are an extensive and pivotal part of being a
human being. Not everyone’s worldview will be the same. People may have been exposed to different
teachings, religions, and trauma that influenced the way they look at the world around them. It is
important to know your worldview because it is used to guide and direct everything you think and do.
Your worldview will be a framework of your thoughts and actions. It determines what career you may
want, ideas on family and friendships, and how you choose to express yourself.

What is a worldview?
A worldview will direct you in your choices you make, what you believe, how you react, but
what exactly is it? According to our text, “ A worldview is one’s foundational beliefs, thought to be
true, which answer life’s biggest questions about reality, knowledge, and values and form a coherent
frame of reference for thinking and acting.” (MacCullough, 2016). Our worldview associates with
certain opinions of our viewpoint. It is our values and beliefs that drive our actions. With your
worldview, you should be able to answer foundational questions of life. When you understand your
worldview, one can determine who they truly are, why are they here on earth, and what is their purpose
in life.

Why is worldview integration so important for a Christian teacher to implement?
Everyone has a standard that determines what they believe in and what they think is right.
Whatever they choose to believe in will define their morals and determines what they believe will be

their purpose in life. Those that do not fully know or understand their worldview are more likely to
attack others who may think differently. This is why it is crucial to know your worldview and make
certain that it aligns with God’s word. It is very important for a Christian teacher to implement
worldview integration in the classroom, because children begin developing their worldview as early as
when they were infants. When children begin going to school, they already have a forming worldview
(MacCullough, 2016). Teachers have a cultural mandate to carry out and seek to fulfill God’s will in
their lives (Smith, 2012). Students need to hear and memorize scripture to reform their minds.

What does it mean to “integrate”?
Integration means to combine things into a larger whole. When we look at worldview
integration, “it is a connecting process as well as a distinguishing process that grows as the basic
questions of life are answered by a biblical worldview and enhanced by knowledge found in any area”
(MacCullough, 2016). In the video called Biblical Integration, Dr. Sam Smith used a great example of
integration. An example of integration is some people use the world’s knowledge as a lens they look
through to assess God’s knowledge. These people are refining what they know about God’s word based
on what men tell them. This is different from biblical integration. As stated by Dr. Sam Smith, “Biblical
integration is to use God’s word as a lens by which to filter the knowledge of man and knowledge of
the world and sift through it that way” (Smith, 2012). The world’s knowledge and God’s knowledge do
not ever fuse or blend together. They are not of the same mind.

How can a teacher begin to develop worldview integration activities into the curriculum
regardless of whether they teach in a Christian, private, or public school setting?
4
Teachers may be limited in how they can integrate the Bible in the classroom, but there are still
a few ways they can implement Biblical views without breaking any laws. According to Dr. Sam
Smith, “One way teachers can integrate the Bible is they should live their lives as a model of Jesus.
Another is to teach to the best of their ability” (Smith, 2012). It is important that teachers teach their
students how to identify and critique worldviews. If teaching in a public school, this does not have to be
precisely from a biblical lens. Teachers can also use analogies and allegories to teach biblical
integration.

Conclusion
It is truly important to know what you believe, why you believe it, and your values. Your
worldview guides you in life and directs your choices. Those with a biblical worldview will see things
differently as they are looking at the world as Jesus would. It is important as a future teacher to
integrate my biblical worldview in the classroom regardless if it is a public school or private Christian
school. This would look like a lesson objective being taught from a Christian perspective. An example of
this could be teaching about morals, character, and values. Teachers may not be able to teach scripture
in the classroom, but they can live it. When we integrate a biblical worldview in the
classroom, it creates a positive environment for students that shows them grace, patience, kindness,
love, and supports their individual interests and needs while also teaching them to love and respect
each other.
