Case Study: LaTonya Assignment
The scenario presented in this case is about a five years old named LaTonya. She is in her
last year of preschool before going to Kindergarten. The public school that she is attending has
requested that all individuals that attend the preschool be evaluated to know if the kids will be
ready to move to kindergarten.
As the teacher in this classroom, one assessment tool that I would use to evaluate
LaTonya would be “Narrative Observations”. According to our class book, “it allows us to record
everything that happens with the child” (Gordon and Browne, 2016). This means I would have
the opportunity to record everything that LaTonya might say, any gestures she would make,
feelings and her interactions as well as her different skills presented in any activity. I would use
this assessment tool because it will give me the opportunity to have general information about
LaTonya and her different developmental domains. Based on that, I would be able to present the
record to the school and from there demonstrate if LaTonya is ready to move to Kindergarten or
if there is any need or limitation that might have to be addressed before she moved to
kindergarten.
Another assessment tool that I would use as the teacher in this classroom would be a
“Checklist”. This is a modified child study technique that uses a list of different items to record
demonstrations of different tasks (Gordon and Browne, 2016). This checklist would be carefully
planned based on LaTonya's age, grade, and developmental skills. Also together with the
checklist, I would use “word Pictures” so I can easily plan my checklist based on what a typical
5-year-old might do in different aspects of development for LaTonya. I would like to use this
assessment tool because it allows me to collect data in a short period of time. Therefore, I can
assess LaTonya in different times and activities using this tool and see what are the skills that

LaTonya has ready to be in kindergarten or if she needs extra help before moving grades.
Since LaTonya is moving to another grade, another tool that I can use to present to the
public school administration that she is ready is a summary report. According to the book, “this
evaluation serves as an overview of what a child has accomplished, what areas of strength are
presented, and what future growth might occur” (Gordon and Browne, 2016). I would use this
assessment tool during her last year of Preschool before going to Kindergarten because as I
mentioned before I want to make sure that LaTonya is ready for the next grade and also it will
allow me to share with her family about her development and in what things they might need to
work with her before moving.
In conclusion, assessments are important to set the tone for a child’s overall educational
experience. Assessment allows not only the teacher to document children’s growth but also
allows teachers to provide a record of how children are doing in different developmental
domains as well to know if there is any lack of progress. Therefore, actions can be taken on time
and teachers can help the child reach the specific goal to have a better educational experience
and most importantly to continue moving during the school phase.
