Purpose:
The matrix serves as a quality appraisal tool to assess the methodological soundness of
studies examining evidence-based practices in special education.
It helps categorize studies based on quality indicators essential for trustworthy intervention
research.
The goal is not to prescribe an ideal study but to identify minimal features that merit
confidence in study findings
2. What do the 1’s and 0’s represent in the quality indicator (QI) matrix?
Absolute Coding: Each quality indicator (QI) receives either a919(present)
or909(absent).
Weighted Coding: Partial credit is given if a subset of a QI’s components is present
(e.g., 50% met).
Studies are deemed methodologically sound if all QIs (absolute coding) or 80% of
QIs (weighted coding) are met 1
.
3. What does partial credit mean?
If a study partially meets some components of a QI, it receives partial credit.
For example, if a QI has three components, and the study meets two of them, it would receive
