Summary
When learning science, it is particularly important that both the learning environment and
teacher development play a significant role within the classroom. That is why it is so essential
that students get the proper understanding that they may need so that they can become better
scientists within the classroom. Professional development is an excellent tool to use in the
classroom because it educates teachers by deepening their thinking skills as educators, but by
also giving them more ideas on how to instruct their students and to help improve their teaching
skills in the classroom.
In the article Effects of Teacher Professional Development and Science Classroom
Learning Environment on StudentsScience Achievement The author discusses the direct
correlation between professional development and the classroom learning environment and how
both concepts add to a student's knowledge and learning about science. The importance of a
student’s classroom learning environment is so detrimental to a child’s success. It is so
significant that it determines how a child learns and whether they will excel in the classroom. Of
course, when a student has the support from their teachers, and the attention that they need, they
tend to do better in subjects like math and science. The reason is because the authors believe that
there is a direct correlation between a classroom learning environment and how well a student
does in science (Li et al., 2022).
Professional development also plays a vital role in the performance of how well a student
does in science because it adds to a teacher's knowledge and how well they perform in the
classroom. To make their point the authors did a case study on science teachers' professional

development by giving them a questionnaire. To prove whether it was a direct correlation on
how well students understand and learn science. But by also how well students did in the
classroom. To help collect their data the authors use field theory. They collected data samples
from 15-year-olds and their schools that they attended (Li et al., 2021). The students that
participated were selected randomly (Li et al., 2022). The Independent variables were science
taught in the class level environment and science teacher professional development. The central
variables were used in the case study was the students, gender, social economic status, and
background (Li et al., 2022).
The results were not surprising in that the teachers who used direct instruction and
catered to their students' needs and questions in the classroom tended to do better. Also, an
organized and disciplined classroom adds to a student's achievements in science as well.
However, when it came to feedback and inquiry-based science, it had a negative effect on
science achievement in school (Li et al., 2022). Gender and self-efficiency did have a significant
role and affected their scientific achievement too (Li et al., 2022). In addition, professional
development is a plus in the classroom for a student's overall success because it not only helps
the students, but it prepares them for the real world.
In conclusion, the case study found that there is a direct correlation between student science and
classroom environment and professional development (Li et al., 2022). Of course, variables do
play a key role as well. For example, teachers' feedback, race, gender, and social economic
background were also linked to how well a student performs in science (Li et al., 2022).
However, it does show that some teachers might not find professional development as useful in
their classrooms as others do. So, more studies need to be done to show the importance of using

professional development and the classroom environment for students who are struggling in
science.
Reaction
I thought that the article was very informational and informative. I learned a lot about
professional development and how beneficial it is in the classroom. A lot of teachers would
benefit a lot more if they used professional development techniques in their classrooms. It will
make them more knowledgeable but also help their students in the areas that they need the most
help in. Of course, an organized and disciplined classroom environment is essential to a student's
success not only just in science but just in general as well. If a teacher gets the correct training
and is more supportive in the classroom, their students will be more successful in science. As a
teacher I would do everything possible to make sure that my students get the much-needed help
that they may need. Whether it be learning new techniques, going to seminars, and getting more
certifications. A student’s performance in class is the product of the teacher’s hard work and
perseverance. If teachers use the necessary tools and techniques in their classrooms, it will help
their students excel in the much-needed areas that need improvement. Both the classroom
environment and professional development play a huge role in how well a child does
academically, especially in science. Students in general must get the necessary help they need,
especially with reading, science, and math. If they receive early intervention and get the help
they need in these subjects, they will be successful and productive individuals. God Bless!
