The teacher will show students how to expand vocabulary when
reading. The teacher will have the students form reading groups
and will monitor the progress of each student and provide them
with context clues expand their vocabulary. Students will have
students share new words they learned and how they figured out
the meaning. They will share how they used reference materials to
find information in their reading. Students

will provide a written reflection and share their writing and how they
used their printing skills.
The teacher reads the picture book "Wolf in the Snow" by Matthew
Cordell aloud to the class then conducts a mini-lesson on how to
point out
specific words and phrases that can be understood through context
clues.
As part of the mini-lesson, the teacher will discuss the pictures in the
book.
In a second mini-lesson, the teacher will show the students cursive
letters
and provide students with examples of legible printing and cursive
writing
and discuss the benefits of both.

The teacher will introduce the objective and schedule of the reading
workshop.
10-mintues
The teacher will provide a mini-lesson on Reading Standard 2.6 to
introduce the concept of how to expand vocabulary when reading.
20-minutes
The teacher will read aloud "Wolf in the Snow" by Matthew Cordell to
the class
5 minutes
The students will get into groups to discuss the book and research
challenging vocabulary words.
10 minutes
The students will take part in independent reading as the teacher
monitors
their progress and provides support.

Each group will come together to share new words they have
learned, the
meaning, and how they researched the meaning.

The teacher will explain the difference between legible printing and
cursive writing.

The teacher will provide students with writing prompts about “Wolf
in the
Snow" by Matthew Cordell and encourage them to write in their best
print handwriting.

10 Minutes
The class will end the reading and writing workshop with a reflection on
what they learned and where they want to improve upon.
Students will meet with the teacher to review progress of reading
strategies share what they learned about during the reading workshop and
what was their biggest a-ha moment during independent reading time.
The teacher will ensure several back-and-forth exchanges to expand
cognition and determine if there were any new words that they learned
and how they referenced pictures and context clues in their reading.
During the conference, students will also have the opportunity to display
their handwriting and the letters they practiced.
At the end of the reading workshop, students will answer questions about
the book for reading comprehension during group discussion. They will
complete a worksheet to match the vocabulary words in the book to the
correct definition. The students will write one sentence about their
favorite part of the book in cursive writing which will be displayed on the
Book of the Week classroom bulletin board.
Students will choose one vocabulary word from the picture book "Wolf in
the Snow" by Matthew Cordell and create a sentence to display neatness
and legibility.
