STUDENT PORTFOLIO 2
Unit: Force, Motion, Energy, and Matter
Unit Length: 4 weeks
Educational purpose of portfolio:
The purpose of this portfolio is to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their
understanding of the Structure of Matter through a collection of work that reflects their
learning over the four-week unit. The portfolio will enable students to demonstrate their
mastery of key physical science concepts, including atomic structure, elements, compounds,
and the behavior of matter.
Written directions provided for your students:
At the end of each week, you will select one assignment to complete from the choices below
for homework, that will be discussed on Monday of the following week and included in your
portfolio. The assignments will enable you to demonstrate competency progression in critical
thinking, writing skills, and knowledge of the material covered in class through presentations or
discussions. Every week, you need to provide a reflection on your assignment and how the lessons
have helped you learn the information, in no less than a page in APA format.
Categories and specific items students are to include in their portfolio:
Week One: Periodic Table
Choose one item from #1 and respond to #2.
1) Model or Draw the electrons, neutrons, and protons of a noble gas.
2) Extended response essay on the article “Students’ Ability to work with the Periodic
Table: The Use of Three-Tier Tasks”
Week Two: Elements
Choose one from the following:
1) Presentation of ionic or covalent bonds predicting the metallic character and tendency
of main group elements.
2) Presentation of physical and chemical properties of main group elements
Week Three: Physical Change
Choose one item from #1 and one item from #2.
1) Short essay on physical change of household objects or oral presentation of boiling
water
2) Classify in a diagram the elements by metals, metalloids, and nonmetals or by pure
substances physical changes
Week Four: Chemical Change
Choose one from the following:
1) Write balanced chemical reactions from the items discussed in class
2) PowerPoint presentation on the difference between chemical and physical change

Grading Scheme
Scores from each category will be averaged. The average will consist of 75% assigned to the
category score and 25% will be given to the portfolio in its entirety. Average will be scored
from 5 to 1 with 5 being an A and 1 being an F. Average Rating Grade
