DIRECTIONS: Complete this vocabulary chart using your reading assignments (i.e., the Gutek textbook and internet database
searching). Definitions are to be technically specific to philosophy of education. Instead of copying the definition verbatim,
paraphrase it in words that would be meaningful to someone new to the field of philosophy. Avoid using the term itself in the
definition. The definition need not be lengthy but must be long enough to convey the full meaning.
1. philosophy
A Profound reflection on our views of life, truth, morality and beauty; As well as our sense of
identity or place in the world.
2. worldview
The lens through which we view life, ourselves and others. It is the way of seeing things, that
becomes our compass or guide in decision making.
3. metaphysics
Studies reality and nature; seeks to answer what is real and how do we know that it is. It speculates
about the reality between spiritual and material aspects of life.
4. cosmology
Seeks to answer the origin of the universe, its history, evolvement, and future. Physical and

5. teleology
The belief that everything has a purpose. It studies aiming towards goals, ends or functions.

6. theology
Seeks to find the truth or nature of God. Studies faith and religion, and the particular tradition and
concepts behind them.
7. atheism
Rejects the existence of any deity, gods, or any Superior creator.
8. pantheism
Explains the universe as a manifestation of the nature of God. God is Everything and vice versa.
