As the superintendent of a school district, the relationship between myself and the board
members needs to be a solid one to keep the best interests of the school district in mind. If I felt
that the board was micromanaging me, and my decisions, I feel that I would address this to the
group. I would give examples as to why I felt I was being micromanaged and asked why
situations were handled the way they were. I would make sure they felt my performance as the
superintendent was sufficient and ask for advice on how to fix any weak points. I would in return
ask to have less micromanaging over the issues I address unless it was necessary.
I feel that address board members directly is the best way to handle most situations,
including when it comes to he said she said issues circulating the community. If a member was
said to be gossiping, and spreading information about me throughout the community, I would sit
the board members down. I would address the communication errors and ask what the
misunderstanding might be coming from and how to fix it. Open communication is the key as a
person in a high standing position, and I feel all board members should be comfortable talking to
me when it comes to situations like this.
As stated above, openness in communication is something I strive for. I want board
members, as well as any other administration, to feel safe approaching me and discussing a topic.
If members do not feel comfortable addressing me face to face, or through an email, I have
considered the idea of an anonymous box. Before monthly board meetings I would leave the
room and let each member, as well as any administration put their opinions/feelings into the box.
We would be able to read and discuss this together in a public setting, while making sure a
resolution is come to.
