SUMMARY OF WORK
IN PROGRESS
For this project, Velma and I wanted to focus on improving school
attendance. We wanted to improve attendance because studies show
when attendance goes up, so do test scores, as well as many other
things. We discussed how this might happen for next school year and
wanted to run some ideas through a trial run during summer school. We
thought about having a prize cart, where every day a student attends
class they get a point. They can also receive points randomly throughout
the week for good behaviors. At the end of the week there are different
prizes for various points. This has shown to affect students in a positive
way by wanting to do well to receive points, and a prize. We also wanted
to see why students miss school during the year. We were able to create
a survey and find out that students missed school not only for sickness,
but because of parents not being able to get them to class on time. This
is the next step in our attendance goals, to figure out ow to assist
parents in making sure students arrive.
COMPLETED ACTION
STEPS
Completed daily discussions on attendance issues
Collaborated on different ideas to improve attendance
Chose 2-3 ideas to do a test run on
Started the first attendance incentive
Created a survey to discuss why students miss school
FUTURE ACTION
STEPS Collaborate with parents on how we may potentially help assist
in getting students to class
Start on attendance incentive 2
EDAS 743
Discuss possible parent incentives for attendance
Discuss ideas with other co-workers and receive their input
Discuss issues or successes with first attendance incentive
ISSUES, CONCERNS,
OR PROBLEMS
Velma and I need help figuring out how to collect data to show the
success/failure of attendance and its correlation to improving test
scores. We need to discuss maintaining money/donations for prize cart
items throughout the school year and for 200 students. Do we give
points for students who show up late or leave early due to a doctor’s
appointment?
