DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
The student will complete 4 Discussions in this course. Post one thread of at least 300 words by
11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned Module: Week following the prompts for the
discussion. Use Turabian Format (unless you are enrolled in a school other than the SOD). You
should engage the reading from this course and any outside reading you may have done utilizing
citations.
You must then post 2 replies by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the assigned Module: Week. The
ideas that you share should not be the same ideas provided by other classmates. Each reply must
be at least 150 words. Make sure to include citations from your assigned readings.
Interview a couple whom you know personally that has successfully discipled their
children. Successful discipleship means that their children are grown and are
following the Lord in their life. You must interview the husband and wife (and it is
recommended that you take your spouse along as well). In this interview, you will
need to ask this couple about the methods of discipleship they used with their
children. Then, in your thread, you must summarize the couple's discipleship
methodologies and describe their family’s circumstances (the family setting, how
many children and their relationship to Christ, etc.).
Interview Project
I spoke with a married couple friend of ours – Cindy, the mom, is my spiritual mentor. Her
husband, Tom, and her have been married for just over 40 years. They have one daughter and 2
grandkids and are very grounded in their faith. They have moved quite a bit in their marriage to
several states and have taken Genesis 2:24, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his
mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” (NASB) to a literal lifestyle.
They are truly each other’s best friend. Their discipleship methodology was centered around
Christ and by example. They strived to model the behaviors they expected while raising Amy,
their daughter. They continue to lead by example with their grandkids. They are connected to a
local church; this has been an important aspect of their discipleship method. Even though they
have moved many times they have always made finding a church home a priority. They serve in
their church wherever needed and opened their home to small groups. By raising Amy with the
discipleship standards that are found in Matthew 18:20, “And Jesus came up and spoke to them,
saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go, therefore, and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you [c]always,
to the end of the age.” (NASB). As a couple they taught what they had learned to Amy and
intentionally lived out God’s word in such a way that it was seen as a way of life by Amy that
only made sense to emulate. Amy and her husband have carried on this legacy to her children
and has included her parents in raising her kids, she seeks them out for prayer support, emotional
support and parental advice. Both Cindy and Tom see this as a successful parenting story.
