Tozer writes about the very nature of God. The book is rich, filled with scriptural sound
doctrines, yet expresses the theme that we know very much, yet very little about our Holy God. It
is that mystery that draws us to him and encourages us to have faith in a God that we cannot
“figure out” in our own strength. Still, we serve a God whose name we do not know and cannot
even state that a quality he possesses is love because that is just who he is. Our understanding of
God in this way paves the way for us to honor God as majestic and holy, set apart from anything
else we may have experienced on earth.
This knowledge that is acquired by seeking God does not drive a wedge between divinity
and humanity, but pulls us closer as God has intended for it to be.
It is a beautiful paradox yet God wants us to seek him more. Tozer writes that the more
we seek God, “the more wonderful, greater service to our fellow men will become for us
imperative. This blessed knowledge is not give to be enjoyed selfishly. The more perfectly we
know God he more we will feel the desire to translate the new-found knowledge into deeds of
mercy towards suffering humanity”1. Tozer’s main theme is summarized in this, knowledge of
God is wonderful and powerful, for it shapes the way we see ourselves, our church, humanity
and thus affects how we respond to the world around us. Therefore, it is imperative that we do
not shift focus from who God is and that we always walk accordingly here on earth.
In my personal life, one thing I have asked God to help me do this year is to understand
his love for me so that I can love others better. In regards to God’s love specially, Tozer described
it as such, “ love, for instance, is not something God has and which may grow or diminish or
cease to be. His love is the way God is, and when He loves He is simply being himself. And so

with the other attributes”2. This made me understand God’s love for us and how I am to love
others in a different way. It takes the “duty” out of doing something and you are convicted to
change on a much deeper level.
