Discussion Reply 2: Characteristics of a Follower
Hey Tiffany, the first line on your post drew my attention to read your post and reply. I
want to go a little deeper on what you said, it takes time to master and is one worth having.” To
be a follower of Christ, means to follow a call that have been placed in our lives. When Jesus
commands Andrew and Peter Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”1 in Matthew
4:19, a call was placed on Peters and Andrews lives. They had a choice to either follow or
reject Jesus. They were fishermen and they had a livelihood. Leaving everything behind and
following Jesus did not make any sense. But as you mentioned that ‘loving God is of utmost
importance and a follower of Jesus keeps this closest to the chest,’ their love for God which they
had seen manifested in Christ constrained them to leave their livelihood and follow Jesus to be
fishers of men (in other words, make disciples). Andrew and Peter never had any training to
make disciples, but their willingness and their obedience led them to be one of the most
influential leaders in the history of Christianity. It took them time to master, and it was worth it.
Jesus not only called them but also changed them to what He wanted them to be in order to bring
glory to God. As Rod Dempsey says, You cannot be rewarded by the Master if you have not
obeyed the wishes of the Master,2 They surely have received their rewards in heaven.
