The Boston Massacre

The Boston massacre remains to this day one of the largest debated disputes from the American
revolution. From the memories of that fateful day in 1770 I begin this essay.
The Commonwealth of Boston in 1770 a group of men were held court in the streets
with two soldiers from the British army. O n March 5th 1770 a silly quarrel over an unpaid bill
to a Bostonian wig maker was the cause. As the 2 British soldiers passed the wig shop where
captain John goldfinch was to pay for the wig he walked by flaunting his new hair and ignored
the shophand and his cries for payment . Soon after a crowd began to gather as the men argued
about the situation and what followed was this.
A fter the first blow was thrown there are many accounts some accurate and some
misplaced of the tragedy that followed but tragedy it was when all hell in fury were done 5 men
lie dying in the streets of Boston more than 1/2 of a dozen were injured and sent to the Infirmary
The British soldiers for arrested on the spot.
a week later indictments were in place in the trial of the soldiers began John Adams an
attorney for the British was hired by a shot hand and was paid in the sum of 18 Guinness and
nothing more the interesting thing to me is how from his jail cell the soldier named Preston was
able to get his recant of the events to the local newspaper sending the town into a fury however
valiant his attempts the letter managed to infuriate Preston and undermine his goal whatever
good he had done captain Preston stood trial 1st and it ran from October 24th to October the 30th
and he was said to have given the order to fire upon the people to which he vehemently denied
after only a few hours of deliberation Preston was acquitted of all charges ,
8 weeks later all but two of the remaining 8 facing trial were acquitted And the two
remaining Hugh Montgomery, And Mattew Killroy were convicted of manslaughter, The time
they served is unknown to me but they manage to avoid the death penalty by leaning in the
direction of self Dfence.
The entire situation lasted From March 5 1770 Until December 14 of the same year .
th th
I have to admit that I knew not a lot about this as I did not pay real close attention to my
History class before I began this paper. I am now 100 % con vinced that the fight was unjust and
not nessesary
In closing I am left feeling that this was an utter atrocity to the fabric of our history. An
un necessary amount of death due to arrogance and hierarchy on the part of the British.
