Abstract
This paper will provide an assessment of the PTSD diagnostic tool the Clinician-Administered
PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5). It will examine the history of the assessment so as to explore
its origins and evolution. It will also examine the contents of the assessment and its technical
validity and reliability. In addition, it will examine the accessibility and quality of the assessment
materials with which clinicians need to work. Finally, it will examine the strengths and
weaknesses of the test and how that affects its usefulness and potential for growth.

Trained mental health practitioners administer numerous assessments and tests to their
clients on a regular basis. Each assessment is created to help diagnose specific mental illnesses or
difficulties, such as ADHD, PTSD, or depression. Some are more intensive, requiring more time
and interpretation, while some are simpler. Through these assessments and tests mental health
