CRISIS COUNSELING 2
Crisis Definition
A crisis is a subjective situation that may cause a disruption in the everyday life of a
client. The event must have three key elements present to be defined as a crisis according to
Jackson-Cherry and Erford (2023). The first element is a precipitating event. Examples of a
precipitating event range from natural disasters to war separation. Next, the precipitating event
leads to subjective (the client’s) distress. Natural disasters can cause distress in the way of
rebuilding what was destroyed or loss of a job due to the natural disaster. Lastly, the day-to-day
functioning of the client is diminished because of the event and its perceived impact on the
client.
Crises are divided into four types: developmental, situational, existential and
ecosystemic. A developmental crisis can be defined as marriage, promotion at work, birth, etc.
Events such as these are considered part of normal development in life. Situational crises are
unexpected events such as natural disasters or a pandemic (such as COVID-19). Existential crises
are events that cause one to reflect on a deeper meaning of life choices or events. Career
changes in midlife, death of a close loved one, health problems are all examples of an existential
crisis. An ecosystemic crisis encompasses anything that is environment related whether human
caused events or natural events. These events not only affect the individual client but also
systems that surround the client (families, communities, schools). An example of an ecosystemic
crisis could be a fatal shooting at the local high school, that affected not only those involved
directly but that families of the slain and witnesses. This crisis can also spark outrage in the
community, leading to petitions to crack down on gun control laws.

Treatment Plan: Identifying Crisis Problem and a Goal
Problem 1 (Social): Due to the events happening at home, (parents divorce, etc) the client is
retracting from his friends and staying in his room all the time rather than speaking to his
friends.
Goal 1: Limit social isolation by increasing social interaction with friends to help foster
supportive relationships.
Specific: The client will engage in at least one social participation/interaction each week with
friends outside of their home. This interaction can be in person, text or via video call.
Measurable: The client will write down their social participation/interaction in a journal The
client is not only limited to physical interaction, but virtual interaction as well for the first two
weeks.
Attainable: The client will begin rebuilding his friendships via virtual, in-person, or both. This
will be established to build a routine.
Realistic: The therapist will work with the client as he re-builds his desire to maintain his lifelong
friendships despite the challenges he is currently facing at home.
Time-limited: Within the span of four weeks, the client will make progress in developing
friendships. There will be increasing levels of activities that the therapist will provide for the
client to enhance the effort.
