Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders
Overview
Substance-related disorders involve about ten separate classes of drugs. The main feature
of substance use disorder is that the behavioral, cognitive, and psychological symptoms all point
towards an individual continuing substance abuse despite the problems it causes.
Disorders
Alcohol use disorder - when alcohol is continuous use leading to significant impairment and
distress
Cannabis use disorder- cannabis is inhaled and consumed in large quantities leading to
significant impairment
Phencyclidine use disorder - pharmaceutical substance is unnecessarily taken continuously
and causes significant impairment
Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder- use of a hallucinogen and the re-experiencing of
constant hallucinations
Inhalant use disorder- hydrocarbon-based inhalant that leads to significant impairment
