SELF-REFLECTION PAPER ASSIGNMENT
Abstract
The beginning of a counseling relationship generally starts with an intake interview. This
assessment is comprised of questions relating to the everyday functioning of the client
including an overall perception of the client’s view of themselves and how others see
them. The assessment questions are provided to the client with the attempt to gain a broad
overview of any problems or issues the client may bring to the counseling session and
begin the rapport building process. While most questions are fairly generalized,
throughout the assessment, questions may be added or omitted in order to provide each
individual client with a positive and helpful experience. Within this assignment, we
created fictional characters to use in an assessment interview in order to hone our
counseling skills. By playing the role of the counselor, the client, and the observer, each
participant was able to gain personal experience from various perspectives of an intake
interview.
