When you first meet your client
The minute that you meet your client, you are consistently observing.
You use each other’s first names
Let the client chose where you are going to sit
Don’t ever let the client sit between you and the door
Provide informed consent
45 minutes to an hour
Nothing between you and your client (no desk, notepad, ect.)

Tissues available within your client’s reach
Review the summary with the client so they know what is in their Documents (except for
assessment)

(Do not say “break” or “breach”) use
Informed Consent:
“Hey there, so before we get started, I wanted to discuss confidentiality, so everything that you
tell me is kept just between you and me, however, there are certain TIMES that confidentiality
does not apply. So if you are a to yourself or someone else, or if there is (or danger Abuse
suspected abuse) of a child, a person with a disability, or an elderly individual, I am mandated to
report that. And lastly if there is a order I may asked to disclose information as well. Does court ,
that all sound good?
(do not report adult or spousal abuse) or have to give information for a subpoena (anyone can get
a subpoena).
BROACHING: “I want to know that I value you and your experiences, and while I do my best
to stay informed, but there may be aspects of your cultural identity or personal experiences that I
may not fully understand. So, if there's anything about your that I miss that is important to you,
please feel free to share or correct me because I want to do whatever to respect you and better
understand where you're coming from.”
Minimal encouragers:
Verbal: Uh huh, go on, hmmm, one word reflection of content
Nonverbal: Bodily movements, gestures, nods
Look for splinters that you want to you can reflect on. (emotions, key points, content)

Today we are discussing the limits of confidentiality
Hey there, so before we get started, I wanted to discuss confidentiality, so everything that you
tell me is kept just between you and me, however, there are certain that confidentiality TIMES
does not apply. So if you are a to yourself or someone else, or if there is of a DANGER ABUSE
vulnerable person (so a child, a person with a disability, or an elderly individual), I am mandated
to report that. And lastly, this would be rare, but if there is a COURT order I may asked to ,
disclose information for that as well. Do you have any questions regarding that?

Use a person-centered approach (states require this): Working towards what the client
values, working towards their quality of life, and increase their independence. (That is
what you are doing the first few weeks)
