Textbook Critique
The field of counseling the culturally diverse is a complex area of study that commands
an understanding of several cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and practices. Counseling the
culturally diverse is a vital part of counseling, as it involves counselors understanding and
addressing the needs of the people that they are counseling that come from diverse cultural
backgrounds. Throughout this course, I have gained great knowledge regarding the difficulties as
well as the opportunities that are related to counseling individuals from various cultures. I have
learned that being familiar with various cultures is imperative to being a good counselor.
The Competent Counselor
There are two areas of knowledge that stand out to me as valuable for those who are
seeking to become multicultural competent counselors. The first area is the understanding of
cultural competence and the impact of the power and the privilege of counseling relationships.
As discussed in the textbook by Sue and Sue (2022), cultural competence is relevant to the
capability of counselors to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds all while
acknowledging their experiences and worldviews. "Cultural humility involves a lifelong
commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique, to redressing the power imbalances in the
patient-physician dynamic, and to developing mutually beneficial and non-paternalistic clinical
and advocacy partnerships with communities on behalf of individuals and defined populations"
(Sue & Sue, 2022). This knowledge is essential for counselors to develop and maintain the skills
to interact and counsel persons from diverse cultural backgrounds in a manner that is both
respectful and efficient. Furthermore, the acknowledgement of power and privileges in
counseling relationships, as written by Sue and Sue, is imperative for counselors to understand
differences as well as foster impartial counseling practices (Sue & Sue, 2022). According to Sue
3
and Sue (2022), cultural humbleness involves a commitment to self-evaluation and self-critique,
as well as an inclination to learn from others. This perception is critical for counselors as it
pushes them to approach each person with an open mind and a willingness to recognize and
respect the person's cultural background.
The second area of knowledge that would be beneficial to a person that is wanting to
become a multicultural competent counselor is having an understanding of the impact of culture
and cultural identity development in others. The textbook by Sue and Sue (2022) examines the
intricacies of culture and its impact on a person's sense of identity. "The process of acculturation
is complex and multifaceted, involving changes in cultural, social, and psychological dimensions
of individuals and groups as a result of continuous contact between two or more cultures" (Sue
and Sue, 2022). By understanding the distinctions of various culture processes, counselors can
provide greater assistance to the people that they serve while learning the challenges that are
associated with adapting to a new culture while keeping a great sense of one’s identity. In
addition, understanding how the cultural identity development models, as outlined by the
textbook, work provides counselors with great understandings of the ways that people see their
cultural identities, therefore informing culturally sensitive counseling interventions (Sue & Sue,
2022). Galatians 3:28 tells us that there is neither Jew nor Greek; ye are all one in Christ Jesus
(King James Version). Having this mindset when entering the counseling field of work will
enhance one’s ability to show respect, understanding, and love to those that are being counseled.
Supporting Research
In addition to the textbook, the article Multicultural Competence in Counseling Students:
Addressing Social Class in Multicultural Counseling Courses completed a study that involved a
total of 122 participants, comprised of multicultural counseling faculty. The study involved the
4
use of an online survey to collect data. Due to lack of a published survey, 64 multicultural
counseling syllabi were used to create a list of instructional tactics to incorporate into a self-
administered survey. This study found that there is a connection between social class awareness
and multicultural competence in counseling students. The incorporation of social class
discussions and awareness into multicultural counseling courses was shown to improve students'
understanding of the of social identities and expand their ability to provide counseling to people
from diverse backgrounds (2023). This study aligns with the information in the textbook.
Textbook Critique
When critiquing the strengths and weaknesses of the course textbook, Counseling the
Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice by Sue and Sue, it is important to recognize its
reporting of multicultural counseling theories and practical applications. First off, the textbook
features case studies and examples, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life
counseling situations. The textbook effectively shows a wide range of theoretical situations and
models that are needed for knowing the difficulties of cultural diversity in counseling. The
textbook also offers insight on topics such as cultural identity expansion, cultural assessment,
and interventions for various cultural groups, providing counseling students with a full
understanding of the theoretical fundamentals of multicultural counseling.
However, one of the weaknesses of the textbook is that it appears to have a limited
amount of coverage on intersectionality in multicultural counseling. Intersectionality refers to the
connected nature of social classifications such as race, class, gender, and sexuality, and the ways
in which they overlap. The textbook could potentially benefit from a greater exploration of how
these overlapping identities impact a person’s experience and a person’s view of counseling. A
more detailed discussion of intersectionality would also improve the students understanding of
5
the difficulties of cultural diversity and provide the student with everyday understandings for
counselors to address the intersecting cultural identities of the people that they serve in a more
inclusive manner.
Personal Reflection and the Christian Worldview
As a Christian, I believe in the truth of the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ in
God’s holy word, the Bible. While respecting cultural diversity, it is key to approach counseling
from a perspective that upholds biblical principles and values. In reflecting on the course
textbook from a Christian worldview perspective, one area that may not fully align with a
Christian worldview is the highlighting of doctrine in cultural views. While cultural doctrine has
its values in promoting respect for diverse cultural beliefs, it can also present difficulties when
reconciling cultural values with biblical truths. As a Christian counselor, it is critical to
understand the conflict between respecting cultural diversity and upholding biblical principles. It
is of vital importance to seek discernment and wisdom when addressing the needs of the people
that you serve within a multicultural context.
From a Christian worldview, the Bible provides counseling on connecting with cultural
diversity while upholding the principles of love, compassion, and understanding. Again, we find
ourselves back to the Holy Bible in Galatians 3:28, where the apostle Paul stresses the equality
of all believers in Christ, exceeding cultural and social groups. This biblical truth highlights the
importance of valuing and respecting the people that you serve that come from diverse cultural
backgrounds, while also identifying the authority of God's Word and how it shapes our
understanding of human nature. While cultural diversity is recognized and respected, the
Christian worldview underscores the need for discernment and being in line with biblical values
6
in counseling practices, guaranteeing that the people we serve are supported in ways that respect
and honor both their cultural identities and their spiritual well-being.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the critique of the course textbook on counseling the culturally diverse has
provided valuable insights into the strengths, weaknesses, and importance of the resource in the
context of multicultural counseling. By examining the capabilities that are required for
multicultural counseling, discovering supporting research from scholarly sources, critiquing the
strengths and weaknesses of the textbook, and reflecting on how it aligns with the Christian
worldview, a full assessment of the resource has been completed. This critique emphasizes the
importance of combining diverse cultural perspectives, supporting research, and ethical concerns
within the context of counseling various cultures. As counseling field continues to grow, it is
vital for counselors to utilize various resources and perspectives that improve their cultural
competence and support inclusive and effective counseling practices while continuing to uphold
professional and personal values.
